Advice from Human Resources for prospective applicants

The primary function of an application is to provide sufficient relevant information about your education, work history and experience to allow the selection committee to decide whether you should be interviewed for the position.  It is the first step of the selection process, and although it will never solely determine whether you are successful, an application does convey important information about you and your suitability for the vacancy.  Your application, therefore, should be an organised information paper written with the needs of the selection process in mind.

Your application should include the following information.

Personal Information

This should include an address for correspondence, contact telephone number, email address, current employer and current type of employment.

Referees

Provide either written referee reports (preferably which address the selection criteria), or provide the names and phone number of at least two referees, including your current supervisor.  These people should be able to comment on your work performance and your abilities in relation to the selection criteria.  We understand that for a variety of reasons you may be reluctant for us to contact your referees or current supervisor unless you are in serious contention for the position.  Please let us know in your application if that is the case.

Education and Training

List chronologically academic qualifications and relevant training courses you have attended.

Work Experience

Identify positions you have held from present to past, listing briefly the duties and key achievements of each.  Give greater detail on the more recent and most relevant roles.

Statement Against Selection Criteria

Using the selection criteria as headings, describe how your particular work experience, skills and qualifications enable you to satisfy each of the selection criteria for the position.

Availability for Interview

As an applicant you will be considered as being available for interview from the date applications close.  Normally at least two days notice will be given.  If you are going to be absent from work/home at any time during the next few weeks, you should advise the dates of absence on your application.

Lodging Your Application

It is essential that you lodge your application by fax to (02) 9805 6510, by email to nickip@aftrs.edu.au or to the following address by the closing date.

The Head of Human Resources

Australian Film, Television and Radio School

PO Box 2286

Strawberry Hills  NSW  2012

The School is not obliged to accept late applications.  If you are not able to lodge your application by the closing date you should discuss your circumstances with Human Resources to find out if a late application will be accepted.

The Interview

Only the most suitable candidates, as assessed by reviewing applications, will be invited to an interview.  The selection committee will be assessing your claims to the position against the selection criteria.  This will usually involve questioning that is structured around the selection criteria.

The Selection

You will be advised of the result of the selection process whether or not you are successful.
