AFTRS Graduate Diploma Radio is designed specifically to meet the needs of the Australian radio industry and is firmly based in practical craft development. The course is delivered in a supportive and challenging learning environment which will prepare you for, and sustain you in, future professional roles in the radio and multiplatform broadcasting industries. You will graduate qualified to work in commercial or public radio.
Course content is structured around research and analysis of broadcast, online and transmedia theory, as well as current practices and trends in radio and multiplatform broadcasting. You will graduate from this course as a creative radio professional capable of contributing to and shaping the broadcast industry.

Apply advanced technical and creative skills in radio to produce compelling, high quality live content for broadcast.
Initiate and implement programming and management strategies to create innovative multimedia broadcasts for multiplatform delivery.

Candidates are required to submit the following:
1. Prerequisites Applicants to postgraduate programs are required to hold a relevant undergraduate degree at bachelor level, or to have completed equivalent work experience and/or training.
The typical duration of a bachelor degree is 3-4 years, and candidates applying by degree equivalence are required to demonstrate they have achieved corresponding learning outcomes by completing a similar volume of relevant work experience and/or training. If you wish to apply for admission to a postgraduate program by degree equivalence, please contact the Student Centre. 2. Application Task Produce and record a five minute item which could be used for a radio broadcast at a station of your choice. Identify which station you have chosen. The item can contain any creative audio elements (submit as an MP3).
Applicants will be shortlisted based on their application task and resume. Shortlisted applicants will attend an interview.
3. Uploading your Documents and Media File
You will be able to upload your media file/s as part of the application process. Ensure you conform to the required file type and size specified as follows.
Each document has a maximum of 10MB in size, and 50MB for media file. Please contact the Student Centre on (02) 9805 6444, if you having any problems in uploading your media file and go to this link for information on media files.

Places in this course are competitive and are based on merit selection. The selection criteria are:
Demonstrated creative potential as evident in support material.
Evidence of interest in and engagement with broadcasting and experience in communicating ideas to a broadcast, online or live audience.
Evidence of ability to complete complex tasks and critical thinking.
Excellent communication skills and an ability to work successfully in a team.
Broad general knowledge and life experience, and an interest in current affairs and popular culture.
Subject 2: Collaborative Broadcast 1This subject aims to enable students to develop the specific skills and techniques to deliver content to radio and online audiences. This subject equips students with the advanced craft and technical skills in show preparation; writing for on-air and online; live and pre-recorded interviewing; announcing and presentation; studio operation; uploading online content and utilising social media. Students collaboratively undertake a live to air and online broadcast and a debrief post broadcast, to review and analyse personal and professional growth, success and challenges.
Subject 3: Reaching Radio Audiences Across Multiple Platforms
This subject explores the vast audience segmentation and varied programming that occupies the Australian radio and online space. Students will investigate rich sources of real world stories and content and the many and varied ways they are being accessed by audiences. There are challenges to push the boundaries of traditional radio content and delivery techniques towards more hybrid forms and varied media platforms and to broaden methods of engaging audiences through innovation in transmedia storytelling.
Subject 4: Collaborative Broadcast 2
This subject explores the role radio plays in regional radio markets in Australia. Combining knowledge of regional market programming theory, audience research and innovative content creation and delivery, students will conceptualise a local radio broadcast for a specified regional audience. Students focus on the regional audience and how program makers undertake and work with research to build programs and content that is engaging, entertaining and relevant to their audience. It focuses on music programming and the value this plays in engagement of, and relationship with, the audience. Students will collaboratively undertake a live to air and online broadcast and a debrief post broadcast to review and analyse personal and professional growth, success and challenges.
Subject 5: Radio Content: Reach and Relevance
This subject positions content as the foundation of high quality broadcasting. It motivates students to produce rich and relevant innovative content which is accountable to audiences everywhere and easily accessible regardless of location or preferred modes of delivery. The focus is on news and current affairs and in particular the concept of infotainment that crosses genre boundaries to produce hybrid content that is interactive and easily accessible.
Subject 6: Collaborative Broadcast 3
This subject challenges students to utilise the creative ideas and advanced craft skills of their team to collaboratively research, design and deliver a radio broadcast for on-air and online. The teams design and deliver the broadcast based on the business models and broadcast laws operating in Australian radio markets. The major emphasis is on news and current affairs and students will be required to consider programming content, station sound and delivery. Students will collaboratively undertake a live to air and online broadcast and a debrief post broadcast to review and analyse personal and professional growth, success and challenges.
Subject 7: The Innovative Business of Radio
This subject is designed to address the managerial, financial, marketing and promotional aspects of the radio business and the relationship between revenue demands and formats and programming. It explores the opportunities for future revenue opportunities and new formats in a convergent media and multiplatform broadcast environment. Students will also undertake in depth analysis of the way social networking is being used to reach, engage and interact with audiences and stimulate online communities as well as drive audience created content, online communities and new formats.
Subject 8: Collaborative Broadcast 4
This subject requires students to conceptualise and apply their professional broadcast skills and ideas with knowledge of the organisational framework of broadcasting to design, manage and produce a broadcast from conception. Students will devise a self-directed project, to develop an original multiplatform broadcast in the format of their choosing. As part of this project, students will have the opportunity to work in a specialist area of their choice on the broadcast. This subject will enable students to interact and collaborate with each other to produce a live to air broadcast and evaluate their ability to conceptualise ideas and creativity in relation to professional broadcast standards. Additionally, students will go on a professional work placement in the broadcast industry.
