In this highly practical and intensive course you will develop your ability to create and deliver content for radio and other digital platforms.

You will work individually and in teams, learning the craft of radio in state-of-the-art digital studios to build foundational skills in radio broadcasting.

This course covers operating the studio, creating a station sound, recording and editing audio, announcing and presentation and digital content for online and social media.

PATHWAY TO AFTRS GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN RADIO

This course is a viable pathway to the full-time Graduate Diploma in Radio if you perform well.

The course is part-time and requires attendance at the AFTRS campus for approximately 16 hours per fortnight.

INFORMATION FOR FOUNDATION DIPLOMA GRADUATES

Foundation Diploma graduates from 2009-2014 are automatically accepted into this course and need only to register by providing their name and the date of graduation. The link to register as a Foundation Diploma graduate is available here.

Part-time, approximately 8 hours per week. Attendance to alternate between two weekday evenings on one week and a full Saturday workshop the next week.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills to work effectively in the public and commercial broadcast sectors.
  2. Apply relevant industry knowledge to deliver content to a brief.
  3. Apply performance, craft and technical skills to deliver engaging content.
  4. Demonstrate collaborative skills.

Admission Requirements

Places in this course are competitive and are based on merit selection.

Candidates are required to submit the following:

1. Application Task

Create an audio self-portrait that explores the theme ‘Me’. Include your interests, radio experience and aspirations. This can be recorded on your smartphone, tablet or other device (1 minute maximum).

2. Uploading your Documents and Media File

You will be able to upload your media file/s as part of the application process. Ensure you conform to the required file type and size specified as follows.
Each document has a maximum of 10MB in size, and 50MB for media file. C

3. Resume and Educational Qualifications

Provide a one-page list of your achievements, educational qualifications and work experience.

Selection Criteria

Places in this course are competitive and are based on merit selection. The selection criteria are:

  • Demonstrated creative potential as evident in support material.

  • Evidence of ability to complete complex tasks.

  • Evidence of original creative thinking and a passion for radio broadcasting.



Subjects

Subject 1: Studio Operation and Panelling

This subject aims to give students the fundamental skills required to operate studio equipment to create radio broadcasts. Students will work collaboratively to create content.

Subject 2: Audio Production

This subject aims to position technical content as a foundation of high quality broadcasting. This subject provides students with the skills to create pre-produced content for broadcast and online.

Subject 3: Announcing and Presentation

This subject requires students to build proficient announcing and presenting skills during highly practical workshops. Students will learn the basics of writing for the ear, finding a voice, developing a conversational style and targeting content to specific audiences. This subject includes a final live broadcast assessment.

Subject 4: Digital Content

This subject aims to give students the essential digital content skills and knowledge to produce engaging content for audiences across multiple platforms. Students will devise a self-directed project and will gradually build an online presence including social media, podcast and blog. Students will gain an understanding of the essential interplay between radio broadcast and the digital space.
