The Directing department at AFTRS currently offers the following postgraduate level courses specifically for directors:

 

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN DIRECTING FUNDAMENTALS


DEVELOP YOUR VISUAL AND STRUCTURAL STORYTELLING SKILLS, LEARN HOW TO WORK WITH ACTORS, MEET OTHER FILMMAKERS AND FORM PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS.


In this course you will explore the three foundations of directing: story, cinematic language and performance through practical camera, sound, story and acting exercises. You will investigate story structure, cinematic language and performance direction as you collaborate with your peers on a series of filmed exercises.

This course overlaps with three other Graduate Certificates (Screenwriting, Producing and Documentary) giving you the chance to develop ongoing collaborative relationships

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN DIRECTING

LEARN TO DIRECT COMPELLING STORIES THAT CONNECT WITH AUDIENCES AND YOUR OWN CREATIVITY.


This intensive, collaborative course enables you to gain key directing skills and experience though four filmed exercises that take you through different types of stories for the screen: a classic three act structure, an alternative story form, an improvised story developed through a joint exercise with NIDA students and finally a screen adaptation from a literary work. You will also do workshops on performance, cinematic language, the workings of dramatic and comedic stories as well as a project incubator, which focuses on story and project development skills.

DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A REAL IMPACT AND CREATE EXCELLENT WORK THAT CUTS THROUGH?


You will initiate and realise a major project that is only limited by your imagination and the resources AFTRS is able to provide. Hone your specialist skills through a tailored, in-depth and intensely practically focused course that will help you achieve mastery in your chosen area of specialisation, and also investigate Australian screen history and big philosophical and sociological ideas in action for context and meaning,. You will be supported to map out your own path in what is an increasingly competitive marketplace as you collaborate with others to achieve genuinely innovative work.


* Only open to AFTRS Graduates who completed a Graduate Diploma between 2009 and 2011. Applicants will need to have demonstrated a high degree of originality and assured craft skills to gain entry into the course.
