The marks a screenwriter makes on a page are often the first steps of a film's journey to the screen...

 

 

  • AFTRS takes applications just once a year, generally at the start of September for intake into the following year.
  • AFTRS holds its annual OPEN DAYS and course information sessions  in September.
  • The 2013 Open Days will be held on September 7 & 8
  • 2014 Courses will be available to view on September 1, 2013

The Screenwriting department at AFTRS offers the following POSTGRADUATE courses specifically for screenwriters:

 

  • GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN SCREENWRITING FUNDAMENTALS

Learn to write and develop emotionally engaging film and TV stories.

You will investigate storytelling principles, dramatic scene writing, long form structures, script analysis and genre conventions through rigorous practical workshops. You will also learn the specific demands and opportunities of writing for the Australian screen. You will have developed a story for a long form film or TV project by completion of the course.

  • GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SCREENWRITING

 

Learn the essential professional and creative skills of a screenwriter.

You will be taught how to originate ideas and turn them into screenplays that engage an audience. You will explore concept, premise, character, genre and structure in the creation of a treatment for a feature film and a TV project. Through collaborative workshops you will be offered the opportunity to see your work filmed and benefit from an understanding of how cinematic language and performance affects the journey from page to screen. You will explore the range of opportunities in the screen industries through industry presentations and structured feedback sessions.

  • MASTER OF SCREEN ARTS

 

Explore and develop your own creative process and voice

An in-depth conceptual and practically focused course that will help you achieve mastery in your chosen area of specialisation. You will be supported to map out your own path in what is an increasingly competitive marketplace collaborating with others to achieve a distinctive work whilst exploring the relevant theories of filmmaking. You will be expected to develop and make an individual work or work collaboratively on a joint project.
