This intensive one year course enables students to develop the practical skills necessary to direct animated projects.

This course offers a unique mixture of practice and theory developed and taught by industry experts, mixing classwork, workshops and production opportunities in a creative multi-disciplinary environment to develop students’ skills in Animation Directing.

Students are encouraged to build a course that fits their passions, skills and needs through a structure that allows each student to create a unique specialist pathway by a combination of core and elective subjects, including subjects from new Graduate Diplomas in Direction (Fiction and non-Fiction) and Game Design, and then put that into practice.

By the end of this course students will have had the opportunity to:

  • Design and bring to life compelling characters to effectively support narrative goals
  • Acquire skills to elicit performances from Animators and voice talent
  • Acquire skills in directing animated projects
  • Initiate and lead a creative project
  • Experience production focused learning in a creative multi-disciplinary environment

Through lectures, demonstrations, masterclasses, and industry guest speakers students will investigate areas such as narrative, character, performance, creative leadership and property development.

This course provides opportunities to develop creative ideas and projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Pre-requisites:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following areas:
    • Animation (Digital 2D, 3D or traditional areas such as stop motion or cel)
    • Fine arts (illustration, graphic narrative or comic book art)
    • Live action directing experience

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated creative potential as evident in portfolio
  • Evidence of ability to complete complex tasks
  • Evidence of original creative thinking
     

Tasks to be completed as part of the application process

  • Set Task 1
    Create an original response to the theme of 'loneliness'. Limit written responses to 500 words or other responses to 5 minutes duration.
  • Set Task 2
    Choose any 5 photographs from the images inlcuded inthe application form (in no more than 500 words)
  • Include four copies of your creative portfolio which demonstrates your talent and potential. Your portfolio can include documentation of artwork, written work, film, video and interactive work. (Your portfolio must fit in an A4 envelope). Clearly outline your official role on any work submitted in your portfolio. Clearly label each disc or element of your portfolio with your name, contact number and application ID number
  • Include four copies of your Curriculum Vitae
  • Include four copies of a professional reference from someone in the industry who can attest to your skills

  • Course Modules

      Course Modules Include:

      CORE

      Directing Concepts and Skills:
      A practical and theoretical exploration of the key conceptual knowledge and skills required by directors working across a broad range of genres and forms.

      Production Workshops:
      Work in teams to develop a short production from idea to fine cut.
      (Shared with students from other disciplines)

      Major Project
      Work individually or in teams to create an original work. Students are encouraged to form teams with students from other disciplines, depending on the needs of the project.

      ELECTIVES

      Students will be required to complete eight electives.

      Elective topics include:

      • Character and Performance
      • Script and Narrative Structure
      • Cinematic Language
      • Directing Voice Performances
      • Original Property Development
      • Character Design
      • Storyboarding and Pre-visualisation
      • Acting for Animators
      • Casting Techniques and Processes
      • Emerging Media
      • Modules from the Graduate Diploma: Directing (Fiction and non-Fiction) and the Graduate Diploma: Game Design

      In addition, students will share Screen Studies units with other disciplines, including genre studies.
