Census Dates - 2008
AFTRS is required by the Commonwealth Government to set a Census date for each unit of study it offers. This is the day when all your enrolment requirements must be finalised. The Census date for each semester is published below.
Census dates are the dates when:
- you become financially liable for any unit of study in which you are enrolled
- it is the final day you can withdraw from a unit of study without financial liability
- you incur a FEE-HELP debt for any units for which you have taken out a FEE-HELP loan
Please note that deadlines for payment of fees are earlier than Census dates.

Unit of Study Tuition Fees with Census Dates and EFTSL Values
The School is required to publish a document containing tuition fees, census dates and EFTSL values for each unit of study on our website, for your information. Please note AFTRS determines one unit of study to equal one semester of study.

Indigenous Scholarships
The Indigenous Program Initiative offers a range of specialist scholarships to Indigenous Australians. All scholarships are based on merit and offered to applicants who have successfully undergone a rigorous selection procedure in open competition.

FEE-HELP and Financial Assistance
FEE HELP
FEE-HELP applies to all AFTRS full-time and part-time award courses.
FEE-HELP is the Australian Government's student loan scheme, allowing eligible Australian students to defer their tuition fees. With FEE-HELP, you can study without paying upfront, then make repayments through the taxation system. You don't make any repayments until your income reaches a set threshold. Interest and loan fees are not payable on postgraduate courses of study. However, your HELP debt is indexed annually in line with the CPI (Consumer Price Index).
With FEE-HELP, you can:
- Defer fees for units (semester).
- Choose what percentage of your fees you want to defer – 25, 50, 75 or 100%. There is a lifetime limit on the amount of FEE-HELP you can receive.
- Pay upfront for some units and defer payment of others.
Detailed information concerning eligibility is available at www.goingtouni.gov.au.
Austudy
Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma students may be eligible for Austudy - go to the CentreLink website for more.

Tuition Assurance Exemption
Tuition assurance is a requirement of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA) for all Higher Education Providers. Broadly, this assurance is designed to allow students to access alternative courses of study and financial compensation if the Higher Education Provider ceases being able to provide a course of study.
AFTRS has been granted a ministerial exemption from these requirements on the basis that:
- Its funding is secure
- It is extremely unlikely that AFTRS will be in a position where it will be unable to deliver a course of study due to its established position as a federally funded government institution.
- The specialised nature of AFTRS courses of study and the unique production model offered is not available at any other institution in Australia.
