aftrs fee help

AFTRS is FEE-HELP approved

AFTRS is an approved Higher Education Provider, which means that eligible AFTRS students have the opportunity to apply for the Australian Government's FEE-HELP loan scheme to help pay their course fees.

All AFTRS award courses are FEE-HELP approved.

You are eligible for the FEE-HELP loan scheme if you are:

  • an Australian citizen, or
  • a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa.

You are not eligible for the FEE-HELP loan scheme if you are:

  • a New Zealand citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident (other than the holder of an Australian permanent humaniratian visa)

FEE-HELP How it works

FEE-HELP means you can study without having to pay upfront fees. You can also pay your fees with a combination of an upfront payment and FEE-HELP.

If you obtain a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government to pay for your studies, a FEE-HELP debt is recorded for you with the Tax Office.

You repay the government through the taxation system once your income reaches a set threshold.  In 2010-2011 the threshold is $44,911.

Repayment of FEE-HELP debt is calculated by the Australian Tax Office and the amount will be included in your income tax notice of assessment.

HELP debts are indexed annually in line with the CPI (Consumer Price Index).

A 25% loan fee is charged on repayment of undergraduate level (AFTRS Foundation Diploma only) courses of study.

Interest and loan fees are NOT charged on repayment of postgraduate level courses of study.

AFTRS Financial Assistance

In certain circumstances, AFTRS may provide limited financial assistance generally to full time award course students who are not able to access appropriate external financial support. AFTRS' assistance is designed to help students commence or continue their studies. The assistance that may be available is:

  • Special Financial Assistance - this is a one-off payment to allow a student to take up his or her offer of award course study at AFTRS. For example, AFTRS may agree to meet or contribute to relocation costs; and
  • Emergency Financial Assistance - this is to assist students experiencing unexpected financial hardship during their course of study. For example, AFTRS may agree to meet or contribute to living expenses, for a limited period of time.
  • Master of Screen Arts Assistance (2012) - this is to assist full time Master of Screen Arts students during their course of study. For example - AFTRS may agree to contribute to living expenses and/or provide rental assistance. Students must meet similar eligibility criteria for basic Youth Allowance or Austudy assistance.

Applications must be made on the relevant  Financial Assistance form, available from Student Services or the AFTRS website. Completed applications along with supporting documentation must be submitted to the Student Services Manager.

For more information on AFTRS Financial Assistance please refer to section 2, point 1.1 of the  Student Handbook 2011 (which can be found in the Current Students section of this website) or contact Student Services.
