Documentary makers on location

AFTRS Documentary award courses are based on practical learning and application of the craft and skills of documentary making. Collaboration and cross-disciplinary practice are integral features of AFTRS award courses – ensuring students develop a deep understanding of how their specialist role fits into the production process.

"I attended AFTRS for the very intense one year Documentary Directing course taught by industry stalwarts Mitzi Goldman and Pat Fiske. In the space of a crazy 12 months... I directed two films from idea to polished final product and learned a thousand things about research, shooting, working with crew, people/time management and the craft of documentary filmmaking. I watched tons of films from the incredible library and was also introduced to various industry professionals, many of whom I liase with now in the real world.  I am currently in a creative partnership for an ABC-funded documentary with a producer I met during my time at AFTRS and am connected with a pool of specialists in various disciplines to work with in my films."
Documentary graduate, Sascha Ettinger Epstein
