Launched in 1996, the IPPYs were designed to bring increased recognition to the deserving 'but often unsung' titles published by independent authors and publishers.

The Awards recognise 12 Outstanding Books of the Year in categories such as 'Most Inspirational to Youth' and 'Most Likely To Save the Planet' as well as regional awards that celebrate books published with a regional focus for 'Best Fiction' and 'Best Non-Fiction Book' in eight U.S. regions, two Canadian regions and Australia/New Zealand.

This year's medalists were chosen from 3,907 total entries: 3,059 in the national categories and 848 in the regional categories. The Australia/New Zealand regional category attracted 60 entries in its first year and LUMINA, which is a relative newcomer on the scene, picked up the SILVER MEDAL for the Australia/New Zealand: Best Regional Non-Fiction category.

IPPY told us, "the judges found excellence in every category, and we proclaim the quality, creativity, and originality of independent publishing to be better than ever" and the LUMINA team are delighted.

The Australian Film Television and Radio School would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners, the Bidjigal people and Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose land we meet, work, study and teach. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and extend our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from all nations of this land.
