Getting a foot in the industry door for freshly minted graduates can be a challenge, however ASTRA has paved the way for new graduates from AFTRS Foundation Diploma to get ahead of the game through its Graduate Program.

The ASTRA Graduate Program offers structured, short-term employment opportunities  in subscription television in a variety of areas such as production, promotion, programming and broadcasting.

Channels involved in this year's program include: BBC Worldwide Australia, Discovery Networks Asia Pacific, TVSN and Expo Channel, Disney Channel, ESPN, STVDIO and World Movies.

ASTRA chief executive Petra Buchanan notes that "last year's program was extremely successful, with seven out of ten participants continuing to work in the industry either on contract or in permanent roles."

Ashley Bell who graduated in 2010 from the Foundation Diploma was offered one of the coveted places last year, "Getting into the graduate program was a really big step. I didn't know which direction I was going to head into … and it's good that there is this program feeding people directly into the industry and providing jobs to graduates that they otherwise might not have access to." Ashley continues to work fulltime at TV1.

This year another ten graduate places are on offer to the graduating Foundation Diploma class of 2011.
