Screen Australia invests in talent with a swag of AFTRS Alumni included in the recently announced recipient list for feature development funding and Talent Escalator internships.

Over $570,000 in funding has been provided by Screen Australia to support 19 filmmaking teams to develop their feature film projects, provide three new industry internships through the Talent Escalator Program, and support three emerging directors through the Director’s Acclaim Fund.

Seven of the nineteen filmmaking teams feature the work of AFTRS alumni and two of the three recipients for both the Director’s Acclaim Fund and the Industry Internships are AFTRS alumni:

Single Project Development: Feature Development

  • Bereft: Producers Lyn Norfor (Graduate Diploma Screen Business, 2010), Sheila Jayadev (Graduate Certificate Producing, 2009), executive producers Nina Stevenson and Greg Sitch, writers Andy Cox and Ranald Allan
  • Dealer: Producer Robert Coe, writer/directors Sam McKeith (Graduate Diploma Screenwriting, 2011), Tom McKeith (Graduate Diploma Directing, 2010)
  • King, A Street Story: Producer Robert Coe, executive producers Jocelyn Moorhouse (Graduate Diploma Directing, 1984) and Timothy White, writer/director Jacqueline McKenzie
  • Neighborhood Watch: Producer Marian Macgowan, director Gillian Armstrong (Graduate Certificate, 1973), writer Lally Katz
  • Obelia: Producer Heather Oxenham, executive producer Phillip Noyce (Graduate Certificate Directing, 1973) writer/director Darlene Johnson (Graduate Certificate Directing, 1998)
  • Pest Control: Producers Jamie Hilton and Michael Pontin (Graduate Diploma Producing & Screen Business, 2011), writer/director Christopher Weekes

Single Project Development: Feature Matched Initial Option

  • Playground Duty: Producer Michelle Harrison (Screenwriting 1991), writer Ned Manning

Talent Escalator Programs: Industry Internships

  • Writer/director Miranda Nation (Graduate Diploma Directing, 2010) will spend six months on an internship working with director Kasimir Burgess and producer John Maynard on the feature film Fell.
  • Emerging producer Samantha Dinning (Graduate Certificate Documentary, 2011) will spend four months in London working with the development and acquisitions team at distribution and production company Element Pictures (The Guard, Shadow Dancer, Omagh)

Talent Escalator Programs: Director's Acclaim Fund

  • Director Jessica Redenbach (MA Producing, 2008) will spend time developing her television project with producers Kate Croser and Sandy Cameron in preparation for submission to broadcasters.
  • Director Paola Morabito (MA Directing, 2006) will work with Andrew Bovell to develop her first feature film.

  •  Alex Murawski (Graduate Diploma Directing, 2010) picked up a three-month internship in Los Angeles, working with director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Black Robe, Mao's Last Dancer) on Bonnie & Clyde.
