AFTRS directing alumna Meryl Tankard (2010) is set to see her half-hour independent documentary Michelle’s Story air on ABC television on Tuesday March 22.

Meryl Tankard's AFTRS' student film Moth garnered awards and nominations on the festival circuit after graduation and Michelle’s Story continues the festival success-story for the director as it picked up the Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2015 and also screened in competition at the 25th Flickerfest International Short Film Festival earlier this year.

An inspirational portrait of dancer Michelle Ryan, who at the peak of her career was one of Australia’s leading dance artists at the Australian Dance Theatre and toured the world until being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which saw her lose her career, mobility and marriage.

Filmed over a six-month period Michelle’s Story the documentary features footage shot over ten years of Michelle performing many major works.

Despite it all Michelle was drawn back to dance, eventually becoming artistic director at the Restless Dance Theatre, an Adelaide-based company working with young people with disabilities.

Also involved in the project were AFTRS alumni Bonnie Elliott (2006) for Cinematography and Alies Sluiter (2005) for Screen Music.

Michelle’s Story will air this coming Tuesday 22 March at 10pm on ABC, and then will be available on iView.
