Vale Anne Deveson

Dec 14 2016

We are very sad to hear of the passing of Australian broadcaster, writer, filmmaker and social commentator Anne Deveson.

Anne was Director of AFTRS from 1985 - 1988 and she also served on AFTRS Council. Under Anne’s directorship, AFTRS Radio division was introduced, an Industry Training Fund for Women [ITFW] was established, a pilot two-year TV directing course began, and AFTRS new purpose built building in North Ryde was opened.

Anne's long career in the creative industries also included Chair of the South Australian Film Corporation and she sat on the Royal Commission on Human Relationships between 1974 and 1977 which was instrumental in the legalisation of homosexuality, the decriminalisation of abortion and the establishment of women's refuges.

Anne’s impact on the industry and society can not be underestimated; she is a huge inspiration to us all. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

The Australian Film Television and Radio School would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners, the Bidjigal people and Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose land we meet, work, study and teach. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and extend our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from all nations of this land.
