Film Festival Hits: The Hottest Student and Alumni Works On Tour

AFTRS students and alumni have officially taken over the festival circuit, touring the world over and celebrating sold-out screenings, premieres, awards and rave reviews. Start taking note – you’ll want to catch these exciting new works by some of Australia’s finest emerging screen talent.

Samuel Van Grinsven’s Masters graduate film Sequin in a Blue Room is on a world domination tour, set to appear at Nashville Film Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival, and Wales’ Iris Prize Film Festival in competition. Also appearing in Nashville are shorts Dots, by Eryk Lenartowicz and Granny Flat, by Rachel Mackey.

UK PREMIERE – Iris Prize

UK PREMIERE: We are excited to announce that Sequin In A Blue Room will have its UK premiere at the Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff, Wales. The Iris Prize Is a crucial festival for LGBTQ+ screen stories and a wonderful launching pad for queer filmmakers around the world. We feel honoured to be a part of the beautiful programme this year. Lead actor Conor Leach will be attending the festival to represent the film and participate in a Q&A. Brisbane International Film Festival will also be showcasing two other AFTRS productions: Stephanie Jane Day’s An Athlete Wrestling a Python and Simon Croker’s All Good Things, set to screen following its world premiere at Reeling Film Festival, Chicago. Keys, a short by Jeremiah Puni will soon make its way to Brooklyn, screening at Revolution Me Film Festival.

Continuing to hop between continents, Hattie Archibald’s web series, Gut Feeling has just screened at Berlin WebFest and will soon be off to Minnesota (nominated for three festival awards), Sydney and New York Web Fests.

Not yet out of the BA, third year student Claudia Bailey has directed Appetite, a short which has been selected for Byron Bay Film Festival. Several of her BA peers also worked on the project. Byron Bay will also host the premiere of Control, a short documentary directed by second year MA student, Abby Dunn, which will also show at Imagine This Women’s International Festival, New York in November.

This year’s Heart of Gold Film Festival will host Cattle by Kerinne Jenkins, H is For Happiness written by Lisa Hoppe and lensed by Bonnie Elliot ACS and Emu Runner produced by John Fink.

Biographical short, Escape By Sea directed by Eero Heinonen and written by Melissa Lee Speyer just had a run at Action On Film Festival in Las Vegas and is about to head to San Diego GI Film Festival.

In late October, The Antenna Documentary Film Festival will feature shorts The Day I Got My Dad Back by Michi Marrosszeky, The Hammerstone by Christopher Nelius and Warburdar Bununu: Water Shield produced by John Harvey. Features in official competition include The Bamboo Bridge produced by Claire Fletcher and Alejandra Canales as well as No Time For Quiet, co-directed and produced by Samantha Dinning.

This year’s Fangoria x Monster Fest will feature three works by AFTRS alumni including Brunch Shift Massacre by Adam Boys, See For Yourself by Kyle McDonnell and Flesh Dream by Kane Gaundar.
