Jonathan Ogilvie Jonathan Ogilvie

Jonathan Ogilvie, Tropfest winner and Palme d'Or nominee gave us his top tips for writing a short film.

1. Size does matter

Be dramatically concise and keep your length within the prime numbers.

2. Be transgressive

Strive to boldly go where no-one else has gone before.

3. Believe in your story

The controlling idea of your film should be true to you.

4. High concept/low budget

For an audience, a strong story concept will always trump high production values.

5. A short film is not a mini-feature

Short films and feature films are as different in form as a Japanese haiku poem is to a Russian novel.
