Want to learn how to create your own podcasts? Get practical advice and skills training from experts, and learn how to take your podcast from an idea to a completed, ready-to-upload file, in this online course.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

This six-week course uses online video chat sessions, audio recordings, readings, and exercises to teach you about:

  • Recording quality sound for your podcasts

  • Software and hardware needed to record, edit and upload your podcast

  • Basic audio editing

  • How production elements can improve your podcast

  • Podcast genres/styles

  • Developing content ideas

  • How to structure a podcast

  • What’s next? Channels, options, strategies to further your ‘brand’

The course is delivered entirely online, with a weekly 90 minute video chat.

WHY DO THIS COURSE

With the increasing accessibility of low cost hardware and software, it is now relatively inexpensive and simple to create and self-publish your own work.

LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE

This course is suitable for all. It is entry level, but presumes an intermediate level of computer literacy.

This course is for students aged 18+ only.


WORKLOAD

This course is for six weeks, with an online video tutorial session every Tuesday from 6.30 - 8.00pm (AEST). First tutorial is Tuesday 1st August.

In addition this course requires you to set aside a minimum of five hours a week to do readings, review other podcasts and do practical recording and editing assignments.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Basic audio recording equipment (at minimum a smartphone or tablet to record audio OR a DV camera with plug-in microphone OR a hand held audio recording device such as a Zoom recorder)

  • Raw idea for a podcast series (this can just be a basic idea)

  • Access to basic audio editing software on a computer e.g. Garage Band, Audacity, Wavepad, or Adobe Audition. ProTools also appropriate.

To participate in this course you MUST have an internet connection (broadband wired OR wireless 3G or 4G/LTE) and the ability to enable cookies within your web browser.

Mac Users: It is best to use Safari, Google Chrome or Firefox as your web browser.
PC Users: It is best to use Google Chrome or Explorer as your web browser.

The chat sessions use Zoom (video conferencing software), to which we provide a link for the free download.

You must have the following to use Zoom:

  • An internet connection - broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)

  • Speakers and a microphone - built in, USB, plug in or wireless Bluetooth

  • A webcam or HD webcam - built in, USB, plug in, or HD camera or camcorder, with a video capture card.
