In this practical, hands-­-on workshop in the AFTRS studios you will gain skills and knowledge about the different techniques and equipment used to achieve camera movement in current screen production processes.


In this ‘hands on’ workshop you will learn why movement is key to powerful cinematic story telling. You will learn and practice key techniques with one of Australia’s most experienced Camera/Steadicam Operators while using equipment that reflects current screen production processes. You will learn by doing a series of exercises with various equipment while simultaneously learning how to apply these skills to increase your cinematography skills, operating skills and the ability to tell the story. Equipment will include:

  • Egripment Piccolo 2 Person Ride On Crane
  • Emu Modular Crane with Remote Hot Head
  • Elemack Mini Jib
  • Movietech Arco Dolly with Scissor Lift Arm
  • Western Doorway Dolly
  • Wally Dolly
  • Product Dollies and Sliders
  • Ezyrig and Shoulder Mount Cameras
  • Ronin Rigs

You will learn by doing a series of exercises with all of this equipment to increase your cinematography skills and experience.


You must already have camera-­-operating experience including a good level of competence with framing, focus and exposure to get the most from this course.


Three full workshop days. You should have a reasonable level of fitness.

You are someone working in the camera area and want to increase your skill levels.


With a 36-­-year career comprising prestigious local and international credits, Richard is now based back in his native Australia having spent over 20 years in the US and Canada working as an award winning, highly respected and sought after Camera/Steadicam Operator. He is also a resident Lecturer in Diploma of Camera Fundamentals at AFTRS.

All equipment will be supplied. You must wear fully enclosed shoes and bring your water bottle!
