Are you looking to collaborate with other emerging filmmakers and add to your portfolio? AFTRS Open’s Three Week Film School is your chance to immerse yourself in all areas of film studies and filmmaking.

The Three Week Film School will feature classroom study along with practical exercises and screenings, culminating in completing a short film - with professional actors - in the AFTRS studios, all for you to take home.

Featuring award winning, industry professionals as guests, you’ll have plenty of guidance along the way. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Over fifteen intense days, you will learn:

  • Film history and theory plus the craft areas in film production and how they work together

  • Producing & screenwriting - where ideas come from and storytelling essentials

  • Directing - including working with actors and communicating a vision with your team

  • Cinematography - including more film aesthetics - plus the lighting and production design teams

  • Pre-production, shoot and post-production

Your friends and family are welcome to the AFTRS theatre for the last day's screening of selected assignments and the final class film.

This course has been designed for new & emerging filmmakers who are looking to take the next step. Places are limited!

This course is only open to students aged 18 +. If you are under 18, you will not be eligible to attend this course.


Warwick Young is a multi award winning filmmaker and completed a Master of Screen Arts - Directing degree at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). In 2007 Warwick wrote, directed and produced U-Turn, which won best comedy at the 2007 Flake International Film Festival, and screened at several international film festivals. In 2012 Warwick wrote and directed the short films Reconciliation and Refuge. Reconciliation was a finalist in the 2014 Peninsula Short Film Festival. Warwick was awarded the 2013 European Union Film Award and nominated for a 2014 Australian Directors Guild Award for his film Stuffed, which also screened in official competition in many international film festivals including the 2014 UK Film Festival where it won Best Film in it’s category; the 2014 Sydney Film Festival, the 59th Valladolid International Film Festival; the 2015 Flickerfest International Film Festival; the 2015 39th Cleveland International Film Festival; the 2015 Down Under Berlin Film Festival for which Warwick won the New Talent Award; the 2015 Cannes Film Festival; was runner up for the Nicolas Baudin Prize for Best Short Film at the 2015 Saint-Tropez Film Festival; and won Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Beverly Hills Film Festival.

Warwick was nominated for a 2017 Best New Filmmakers Award and most recently he was the Director’s Attachment on the Goalpost Films production of the Foxtel Mini-series Fighting Season. Since 2004, Warwick has been the originating producer and script editor of the feature film Last Man which will be directed by co-writer, co-producer and acclaimed filmmaker Fred Schepisi.

As an actor Warwick’s film credits include Wolverine, Superman, The Great Raid and Beneath Hill 60. Warwick’s television dramas and tele-movie credits include All Saints, Small Claims, Water Rats, Sea Patrol, Rescue Special Ops, Rake and most recently Carlotta for the ABC and The Killing Field for the 7 Seven Network.
