Ben Mathews' AFTRS short Emily which he wrote and
directed as part of his AFTRS Graduate Diploma Directing in 2010 is
one of five finalists, selected from 51 entries across 29 countries
and will be advanced into competition in the Foreign Film category
in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 39th Annual
Student Academy Awards.
Up to three winners will be selected from this group and brought
to Los Angeles to join U.S.-based Student Academy Award® winners
for a week of industry activities and social events culminating in
an awards ceremony on Saturday, June 9, at Samuel Goldwyn Theatre
in Beverly Hills.
Emily is the first AFTRS short in 20 years to be accepted
into this competition.
The other selected films hail from: The University of Westminster
in the UK, The Thomas Stuber, Film Academy Baden-Wüerttemberg, in
Germany, The National Film and Television School also in the UK and
The International Film School Cologne, Germany.
Several past winners in the student Foreign Film competition have
gone on to earn further recognition from the Academy at the Academy
Awards.
We are delighted to see Ben Mathews and the entire crew & cast
that worked on Emily receive this recognition which can be added to
the three previous Academy Award nominations for AFTRS shorts:
