The nominees have been announced for the 2012 International Emmy Awards and local production The Slap has picked up a nomination for Best Drama Series.
It's great news for the Matchbox Pictures team/ the ABC / Screen Australia and the swag of AFTRS alumni who worked on the TV adaptation of Christos Tsolkias book.
The Slap will be up against Braquo (France),
ICAC Investigators 2011 (Hong Kong), The Kitchen
Musical (Singapore) and The Social Leader
(Argentina).
AFTRS alumni involved in The Slap include:
Tony Ayres (Screenwriting, 1989) series script
Producer and Episode Director; Robert Connolly (BA
Producing, 1995) Episode Director; Cate Shortland
(Graduate Diploma Directing, 2000) part of Writing Team;
Antony Partos (BA Sound, 1991) series Original

Commis (MA Cinematography, 1999) Cinematography [8

We also spied a report that NBC is close to finalising a deal to
adapt The Slap for the US market with Brothers &
Sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz writing the
adaptation to be executive produced with Matchbox Pictures'
Tony Ayres and US producers Walter
Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Ted
Gold.
Tony Ayres told the TV Tonight, website "We are
thrilled to be working with such accomplished producers as
Parkes Macdonald, and excited to see how the
premise of The Slap which really is universal in its reach
and effect, will translate in particular into the American
context."
To date The Slap has picked up a host of awards including
AACTAs, Logies, AWGIEs, Australian Director's Guild awards a
nomination for a BAFTAs and a Monte-Carlo Television Festival
award.
We also hear that Rake written and directed by AFTRS
alumnus and current council member Peter Duncan
(BA Screenwriting, 1994) is also in development for a US adaptation
with Greg Kinnear in the title role.
It is brilliant to see Australian quality productions of this
calibre being made for television.
