This is a high-level and hands-on course for tomorrow’s on-air and behind-the-scenes broadcasters. You will learn at an advanced level that the essential elements of good broadcasting are communication, storytelling and relevance to audiences.
This course produces creative radio professionals capable of contributing to and shaping the Australian broadcast industry. It is delivered in a supportive and challenging learning environment which will prepare you for, and sustain you in, your future roles in the radio and multi-platform broadcasting industries.
This part-time stream, offered over two years, enables you to continue working full-time while you study. AFTRS also offers a full-time stream of this course delivered over one year.

Is the 2019 Graduate Diploma in Radio: Part-Time right for you?
During the course you will collaborate to produce four major live broadcasts. This provides the opportunity to experiment with and realise ideas in a variety of formats and develop specific, individual, advanced craft practices, whether they be in announcing, production, program producing, writing, news, voice over, music directing, online and digital content, podcasting, marketing/promotions or sales.
Individual stations also volunteer their time and facilities to help you experience the ‘real thing’ through work attachments and station visits, so that your learning and practice goes well beyond the School environment. Professionals from all sectors of radio take part in instruction and practice, passing on their currency and experience.
You will learn at an advanced level that the essential elements of good broadcasting are communication, storytelling and relevance to audiences. The course shapes your attitudes and motivations towards achieving the best possible standards in broadcast and related performance. It also develops your confidence in your own creative ability and role in contributing to the broadcast industry’s future.
This part-time stream of the Graduate Diploma in Radio is ideal if you want to continue working full-time while you study.

To apply you will need to:

Places in this course are competitive and are based on merit selection.
1. Prerequisites
Applicants to postgraduate programs are required to hold a relevant undergraduate degree at bachelor level, or to have completed equivalent work experience and/or training.
The typical duration of a bachelor degree is 3-4 years, and candidates applying by degree equivalence are required to demonstrate they have achieved corresponding learning outcomes by completing a similar volume of relevant work experience and/or training. If you wish to apply for admission to a postgraduate program by degree equivalence, contact the Student Centre.
2. Selection criteria
1. Evidence of interest in and engagement with broadcasting.
2. Evidence of original creative thinking and ability, enthusiasm, development of ideas and experience in communicating those to a broadcast, online or live audience.
3. Evidence of ability to complete complex tasks and critical thinking.
4. Excellent communication skills and an ability to work successfully in a team.
5. Broad general knowledge and life experience, and an interest in current affairs and popular culture.
3. Resume and Educational Qualifications
Provide a one-page list of your achievements, educational qualifications and work experience. You must also provide a certified copy of your highest education level as detailed on the How and When to Apply page on the AFTRS website. Use the link provided for information on how to certify documents.
4. Proof of citizenship/residency

1. Produce and record item
Produce and record a five minute item which could be used for a radio broadcast at a station of your choice. Identify which station you have chosen. The item can contain any creative audio elements (submit as an MP3).
Applicants will be shortlisted based on their application task and resume. Shortlisted applicants will attend an interview.
Tuition Fees
The tuition fee shown above is the indicative course tuition fees, expressed as both a total course cost and per annum cost. It is reviewed each year and you are liable for the additional tuition costs if the tuition fees rise during the course of your enrolment.
