The wait is nearly over – this time tomorrow, you’ll be eagerly checking into AFTRS Open Day, at our campus or online. You will learn about our programs, get involved in lively discussions, participate in a range of exciting hands-on activities—including the making of a short film and live radio broadcast—and, perhaps most importantly, you will get applications advice from AFTRS staff and chat to students about life at the national screen and broadcast school. There’s A LOT happening on the day, so we’ve assembled some tips to make sure you make the very most of this once-a-year event.
1. ARRIVE EARLY
If you’re joining in person, allow plenty of time for travel and check-in on arrival. All course information sessions take place in our theatre which has limited capacity, and you don’t want to miss out. The same thing goes if you’re joining online: log on early and make sure you can access the session before the stream starts.
2. HAVE A GAME PLAN
Know which of our programs you’re interested in and plan your day around the sessions that focus on those. So, if you’re interested in our Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production program, you should start with the 10.00 am course info session, then take the 11.00 am campus tour, followed by a Meet the Mentors session, stop by the scholarships desk, the library and the merch desk on your way to lunch, then return to participate in the making of a short film, attend the Career Pathways talk with our CEO and Council members from Netflix and Aria, and cap off your day with the world premiere of the film you helped to make and a panel discussion featuring the BA students you met making it. That’s a day well-spent.
3. BECOME BEST BUDS WITH OUR STAFF AND STUDENTS
There’s nothing like having a friend on the inside. There will be dozens of AFTRS staff and students on campus and online. If you’re lost or confused or just want some advice on campus, make a beeline for those friendly folks in the black AFTRS Crew tees—you can’t miss them—and online, leave a question in the chat, they’re standing by to help.
4. BE INTREPID
We’re not kidding when we say Open Day is an access-all-areas affair—it’s your chance to get into the guts of the School. Our studios will not only be open but there will be opportunities for you to see them in action, including our super exciting virtual production volume. Cover every inch of our campus. Visitors joining online will have access to a virtual campus tour hosted by one of our current students.
5. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY
It’s easy to get distracted by all the fun activities on offer and sessions are super inspiring, but you’ve come for a reason and that’s to become an AFTRS expert and put yourself in the best position to submit a successful application. The only way to do this is to be attentive, take loads of notes and ask lots of questions. You want to leave feeling informed and motivated.
