Writing a Short Film Intensive

This five day intensive will step you through the art of screenwriting for film. Through a series of lectures, screenings, written exercises and creative discussions, you will learn the fundamental principles of screenwriting by writing a short film script. Under the guidance of an award winning industry professional you will also gain valuable feedback on how to structure dramatic scenes and create memorable characters and dialogue that will ensure every second of your short film counts.

A short film is an excellent calling card for a first time filmmaker. It’s a great way to give an audience a glimpse at your ability to tell a story succinctly, and many screenwriters break into the industry by writing a short film to showcase their work.

 

Take your stories from initial idea through to a finished script ready to be pitched on the final day

Explore story structure, theme, character, roadblocks, arcs, tension, conflict and resolution as they are used in filmmaking

Work with professional actors on your character development and dialogue

We do recommend if completely new to the area of screenwriting you may want to consider Intro to Screenwriting as a starting point prior to this course to then get the most out of this intensive.

What you will need

Please bring a laptop, with Word or Pages or similar,  for use during the course. If you do not have a laptop please let us know asap so we can arrange for access to one for you during the course.

You will need to do some writing in the evenings during the course so please allow up to a couple of hours each evening during the course for this.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This course is for students aged 18+ only.

If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.

AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.

Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.

AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.

If you are planning to travel to attend a course, please confirm with AFTRS that the course is confirmed before you make your travel bookings. This decision is dependent on course enrolments meeting minimum numbers. AFTRS is not liable for any travel or accommodation costs incurred through course cancellation at any time for any reason.
