Learn the art of writing a short film

Working with an experienced screenwriter, learn the art of screenwriting through writing a short film – from initial conception through to the development of your story. This is an intensive and rewarding course if you’re interested in creative writing, writing for the screen or if you are developing screen content as part of your HSC studies. Your draft short film script will be read at the end of a course, with valuable feedback from your tutor.

Learn about the different types of short films, and where to find ideas and inspiration.

Screenplay layout

Discuss “what is story?” and how does it work in short form?

Is the Writing a Short Film: Grades 9-12 right for you?

This course is available to students who are in years 9-12 and have a real interest in the craft of screenwriting.

Students who are 16 years and over may also consider AFTRS’ Intro to Screenwriting course, which has less focus on the short film format, but does not include individual feedback on writing work.

Once enrolled we will send you further instructions.

You will also learn how to lay out your screenplay according to industry standards using Celtx (free screenwriting software). You will need to sign up to receive the free basic scriptwriting module, which you can do here.

If a attendee wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a fee.
