Estimated to be a $12.3 billion industry world-wide, voice over is one of the most exciting and competitive fields within the radio and TV industry.
An average day might involve reading straight commercials, performing characters, singing jingles or narrating a corporate video or audio book. The next week you might find your own voice on the end of an on hold system or on your favourite radio station.
Just having a great voice is not enough -- you need the skills to be able to use it properly. Industry expert Amy Longhurst (Voice of Foxtel Kids Channel, Nick Jnr, Nickelodeon, Dettol, Milo, Wrigley's, Napisan, Mitsibishi, Energizer, etc.) will give you the techniques to get the best out of your voice to get a start in the voice over industry.
This two-day intensive course features numerous practical exercises in the AFTRS state-of-the-art Radio studios.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- Use correct vocal and microphone techniques
- Describe the industry requirements for voice over artists
- Mark up a standard commercial script
- Rework a script to accommodate change in style, time or grammar
- Interpret and deliver straight and character voice reads within an allotted time
- Interpret and deliver a straight narrative read
- Accept and incorporate direction from a studio producer
Applicants will preferably have some on air experience in either radio or TV or an acting/performance background.

About the Course Lecturers
An accomplished stage and screen actress, Amy Longhurst is one of Australia’s top voice-over artists with EM Voices. For two decades as the female voice of multi-award winning Foxtel Kids channels Nickelodeon and Nick Jr, she has done thousands of voice-overs for every major advertising agency and radio station in Australia.
She is currently on air as voice of Simple Skincare, NRL, Freedom, Uncle Toby’s, Westpac, Milo, Scotts Garden, Milo, Napisan, Preen, Wriggleys, Kleenex, Campbells, NRMA, Fashion Weekend, Innoxa, Kellogg’s, Vodafone, RTA, Nestle, ATO, CBA, Telstra…and more.
Since graduating acting at NIDA, Amy has performed an eclectic array of roles from the lead female in Elvis the Musical, Juliet in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at the Botanic Gardens, singing country in Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls to playing Terri the cop in Home & Away.
Amy’s radio presenting credits include hosting the Qantas In-flight ‘Light &Easy Program’, ‘Preview Arts’ and ‘Drive’ on 89.7JazzFm and the National Jazz Music Correspondent for Australian Music Airplay Project (AMRAP) creating, producing and recording sound features for National broadcast.
