Explore the role of a Producer

“What does a Producer do?” In this introductory, seminar-style course you will get a good insight into the role – and how much it varies across different types of content. You will become familiar with the workflows of a producer in both TV, film and creative agencies, and learn the most effective and efficient ways to produce a project. You’ll get real world advice, case studies and information on how money influences the creative decisions you will be making.

Delivered by AFTRS MASB Program Convenor Peter Herbert, and industry expert Dr. Pieter Aquilia.

Explore the different roles of Producers, the need to understand Screen Business practice, finance and funding, legal and insurance issues, and the major stages from concept through to marketing the finished product.

Get knowledge about building a creative team, script development, research and marketing, finance and funding, legal and insurance issues.

Identifying the key funding bodies and mechanisms within the industry.

Is the Intro to Producing right for you?

This is an introductory course. No previous experience as a producer required, but some understanding of filmmaking terminology and procedures will be assumed. Aspects of this course will reference teaching practice and content in the AFTRS Masters’ program.

This course is open to students aged 16 years and over (students under 18 must complete an under 18 consent form).

If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.

AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.

Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.

AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.
