Explore prop making and scenic art

Learn the practical skills required for scenic art, set finishing and prop-making for film and television productions in this five-day hands-on course in the AFTRS state-of-the-art staging workshop and studio.

Scenic art techniques

Learn basic scenic art techniques used in finishing a film set including paint effects and texturing e.g. recreating actual surfaces like wood, marble, sandstone etc.

Prop making skills

Learn prop making skills including colouring, ageing and prop breakdown; and the basics of silicon mould making and casting, and making “stunt double” props.

Insights to the industry

Learn about the relationship between the production designers, prop makers and the scenic art departments

Is the Prop Making & Scenic Art Intensive right for you?

This course is only open to students aged 18 +.

No experience is necessary to do this course, just an interest in film & TV design and a passion for getting your creative juices flowing and your hands dirty! The skills taught in this course are vital for anyone wanting to pursue a film or TV art department career, and will also be useful for anyone working in theatre productions, events and other artistic practice.

You will create a set/scenic piece and prop/s based on a specific design and take away photos of your work, shot in studio on the final day of this course.

What you will need

This is a very practical, hands on course. Enclosed shoes essential and make sure you wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty!

This course is only open to students aged 18 +.

This course is for students aged 18+ only.

If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.

AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.

Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.

AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.

If you are planning to travel to attend a course, please confirm with AFTRS that the course is confirmed before you make your travel bookings. This decision is dependent on course enrolments meeting minimum numbers. AFTRS is not liable for any travel or accommodation costs incurred through course cancellation at any time for any reason.
