You’ve learned the basics of directing, but how do you become a working director and build a sustainable career? This eight-week, 100% online course is designed for emerging filmmakers, offering insight into the role of the director to help take your craft to the next level. Led by acclaimed and multi-award-winning Australian director, Peter Andrikidis, you’ll develop your directing knowledge and skills from the comfort of your own home.

Working with a screenplay from an award-winning drama series or film, you’ll learn about the preparation, work and insider knowledge needed for the many facets of a director’s role.

The weekly video chat sessions will provide you with insights and knowledge to improve your directorial skill set and apply it to your own projects and career development.

Topics covered include analysing screenplay structure and scene analysis, working with actors, communicating your vision, designing your world, collaborating with your team, pitching for projects and more.

This practical intermediate course is designed for filmmakers with some experience, offering insight into the role of the working director to help take your craft to the next level. There will be some assumed knowledge, so you should undertake an introductory course, such as AFTRS’ Intro to Directing if you don’t already have some practical experience on production.

What you will need

This is an intermediate course. You are expected to have undertaken an introductory directing course prior to enrolling or to have some on-set experience.

Each week you will have small exercises and reading to do outside of the Zoom session. You should allow for approximately 4.5 hours per week to complete the work required to finish the course (including the Zoom session) for a total base learning commitment of approximately 36 hours. For those students interested in doing more additional learning materials and resources will be provided.

This course is delivered 100% online including weekly live Zoom video chat sessions.

You will need access to a computer with a camera, sound (headphones are recommended) and a good internet connection, as well as a quiet place to participate.
