Michael Mason

Graduate Diploma Commercial Radio, 1982

Michael Mason started his career in radio as an office boy in Sydney before moving to regional stations in Cairns and Shepparton. He joined the ABC in 1984 and quickly became one of the corporation’s youngest managers, overseeing the Canberra office. He was later tasked with running local production in South Australia.

In 2000, Michael started managing the ABC’s Local Radio network, driving it to a new peak in audience share and reach. He also oversaw the introduction of digital radio and the launch of the Radio App.

Following a stint as RN Manager, Michael was appointed Director of Radio in 2014. Only a few years later, he became Director of Regional & Local, responsible for the development of local radio, TV and online content in over sixty locations across Australia. Since leaving the ABC in 2018, Michael has worked as a radio consultant both in Australia and Europe.

AFTRS HIGHLIGHT

Being in the first-ever Radio course at the old campus across the road from Macquarie University. We didn’t know it then, but we were pioneers.

CAREER HIGHLIGHT

Working for the ABC is always an honour but overseeing the entire radio output—from Triple J to Classic FM to a small rural outpost to RN and the capital city stations—was a true joy.
