This June and July AFTRS Open is running intensive, hands-on workshops in AFTRS state-of-the- art facilities. You’ll be taught by current industry professionals and have access to the latest equipment.

Are you looking to collaborate with other emerging filmmakers and add to your portfolio? Our all-new, Three Week Film School is your chance to immerse yourself in all areas of film studies and filmmaking. This intensive course will feature practical exercises along with classroom study and screenings, culminating in making a short film with professional actors in the AFTRS studios.
1 - 19 June
Write a completed short film script in just five days! Learn from Tropfest winner and Palme D’or nominee Jonathan Ogilvie and inspiring guest speakers how to take your stories from initial idea through treatment and draft stage, to a finished, polished script ready to be pitched. Story structure, theme, character, roadblocks, arcs, tension, conflict and resolution will be explored as they are used in filmmaking through fast paced lectures and workshops.

29 June - 3 July
Make a short film in just five days. Experienced industry filmmakers will guide you with lectures and fast paced practical exercises to conquer the major areas of directing, cinematography and post production. Get an inside scoop on the inner workings of crew roles and a film set as well as getting hands-on experience. At week’s end, you are encouraged to invite family and friends to the Winter School Screening of your film.

6 - 10 July
Learn essential radio skills from experienced radio industry professionals. In this five day intensive you’ll gain the confidence and skills to begin your career in radio. From roles and responsibilities and announcing and presentation, to editing and studio skills, we’ve got it all covered.

29 June - 3 July
Develop your own on-air persona and learn skills to develop your career in the media. This course combines AFTRS Open’s regular ‘Introduction to TV Presenting’ and ‘Announcing and Presentation’ courses plus a day of our ‘Voice Over’ course into one intensive week. You’ll receive practical tuition in on-camera presenting skills including writing your own scripts, conducting interviews on camera, voice over skills for TV and radio, announcing skills, working with autocue and developing your own unique presenting style.

22 - 26 June
Good field producers are in high demand in Factual TV, Reality TV, Current Affairs and Documentary. This course is ideal if you work in a production role such as research or associate producer and want to upgrade your skills, also ideal for camera and sound operators who want to "cross over" and Production Coordinators and Production Managers who want to move across to producing. Skilled videographers and corporate video professionals will also find their storytelling and creative skills extended.
22 - 26 June
An advanced lighting course for cinematographers who want to expand their knowledge in lighting for film and TV drama. Over three days, you’ll light a set to various scripted scenarios under the tuition of a professional cinematographer. Students will work with a gaffer, best boy, camera operator, grip and two actors in AFTRS' state of the art studios. This is a practical, hands-on course.
24 - 26 June
Do you have a great idea for a TV show but need help taking your idea to the next level? Learn the fundamentals of creating viable and original TV drama or comedy series concepts, including working in a team writing environment, in this five-day intensive course. You’ll learn about: the process of concept creation from idea inception to concept presentation, the structure of a TV series, how to run multiple storylines, how to structure a 5 act episode, how to create a written pitch, writing as part of a team and much more!
