This course combines AFTRS Open’s regular ‘Introduction to TV Presenting’ and ‘Announcing and Presentation’ courses plus a day of our ‘Voice Over’ course into one intensive week. The course includes practical tuition in on camera presenting skills including writing your own scripts, conducting interviews on camera, voice over skills for TV and radio, announcing skills, working with autocue and developing your own unique presenting style.

Do you have a great idea for a TV show but need help taking your idea to the next level?Learn the fundamentals of creating viable and original TV drama or comedy series concepts, including working in a team writing environment, in this five-day intensive course. You will learn about: the process of concept creation from idea inception to concept presentation, the structure of a TV series with and without commercials, how to run multiple storylines using theme and structure, how to structure a 5 act episode, how to create written pitch, writing as part of a team and much more!

Write a completed short film script in just five days! Learn from Tropfest winner and Palme D’or nominee Jonathan Ogilvie and inspiring guest speakers how to take your stories from initial idea through treatment and draft stage, to a finished, polished script ready to be pitched. Story structure, theme, character, roadblocks, arcs, tension, conflict and resolution will be explored as they are used in filmmaking through fast paced lectures and workshops. An AFTRS Open Winter School panel of experts will listen to the pitches and vote on the script that will be made in ‘Filmmaking’ - week 2 of Winter School.

Make a short film in just five days! In this five day filmmaking intensive, you’ll get busy in AFTRS state-of-the-art film studio to take a winning script from week 1 of Winter School from script to screen. Experienced industry filmmakers will guide you with lectures and fast paced practical exercises to conquer the major areas of directing, cinematography and post production. Get an inside scoop on the inner workings of crew roles and a film set as well as getting hands-on experience. At week’s end, you are encouraged to invite family and friends to the Winter School Screening of your film.

Learn essential radio skills from experienced radio industry professionals. In this five day intensive you’ll gain the confidence and skills to begin your career in radio. From roles and responsibilities and announcing and presentation, to editing and studio skills, we’ve got it all covered.
DAY 1: Introduction to radio, radio styles, roles and responsibilities, editorial and where stories come from plus how to tell them. Followed by a technical overview of studio, field recorders and editing equipment.
DAY 2: Announcing and presentation basics – writing, speaking, news reading and interviewing.
DAY 3: Editing, audio and making a radio package.
DAY 4: Studio practice, package preparation and more.
DAY 5: Bringing it all together - present a live radio program from the AFTRS Radio Studio in teams of two with group and private feedback.
