AFTRS alumni have again been recognised at the Australian Cinematographer’s Society NSW Awards, receiving 18 accolades across nine categories.

The biggest award of the night – the Ross Wood Snr ACS Judges Award for Best In Show – went to Joshua Flavell ACS (Graduate Diploma: Cinematography, 2010) for his work on AACTA-nominated feature film Pimped. He also won gold for the film in the Features – Cinema (Budget under $2M) category.

Several other alumni won gold for their work, including Michael Filocamo, Zachary Hardaker, Ross Giardina, Carl Robertson, Zoe White, Bonnie Elliot, Borys Vimenets and Andrew Commis.

Bonnie Elliot (Master of Arts: Film, TV and Digital Media Cinematography, 2006) secured three awards: Gold in Drama Series & Telefeatures for The Hunting, silver in Feature Cinema (Budget over $2M) for Slam and bronze for Palm Beach in the same category. Fellow alumnus, Andrew Commis won gold in the feature (over $2M) category for his work on Angel of Mine, a feature directed by alumna Kim Farrant (Master of Arts: Film & Television [Hons] Directing, 1999).

AFTRS was strongly represented in the Student Cinematography section, with alumni winning in every tier. Michael Filocamo received gold for A Bird With No Legs as well as silver for Azaar. Current MA student (and 2014 Grad Cert Cinematography Fundamentals graduate) Jay Grant earned the bronze certificate for his work on Samuel Van Grinsven’s (MA Screen, 2018) AACTA-nominated feature, Sequin In a Blue Room.

Zachary Hardaker (Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, 2017) received the gold in the Music Clips category for Taikoz’ Toward The Rain. Fellow BA grad Emma Elias, who collaborated on the work with him, accepted the prize on Zachary’s behalf.

Also recognised on the night was Hugh Miller, 2002 graduate of Master of Arts: Film & TV Cinematography, who was awarded ACS accreditation.

Congratulations to all alumni who were recognised at the ceremony, which was held in Sydney on Saturday 2 November.
