Ten AFTRS alumni have been recognised across eight categories at the virtual 2020 edition of the Australian Screen Sound Guild Awards. The annual event celebrates excellence in screen sound across feature and documentary film, TV and online series, factual entertainment, interactive media and more.

Collecting all four feature film prizes – Soundtrack of the Year, Best Film Sound Mixing, Best Film Sound Recording and the Andrew Plain Award for Best Film Sound Editing – was Netflix original The King. The epic historical war drama, directed by David Michôd and starring Timothée Chalamet, showcases the work of AFTRS alumni in the sound department: sound designer and re-recording mixer Sam Petty (AFTRS Certificate, 1991), sound effects editor Tara Webb (Graduate Diploma in Sound, 2011), foley recordist Alex Francis (Graduate Diploma in Sound, 2012), and sound effects editor Mick Boraso (Graduate Diploma in Sound, 2011). Foley recordist, Alex Francis has also been recognised among the sound team of ABC series The Unlisted (EP09), which claimed Best Sound for a Children’s Programme.

Acclaimed ABC series Total Control, directed by alumna Rachel Perkins (Specialist Extension Course Certificate Producing, 1995), claimed Best Sound for a Drama or Comedy (over 30 minutes), honouring its talented AFTRS alumni-packed sound team including sound designer and re-recording mixer Luke Mynott (Master of Arts: Film, Television and Digital Media in Sound, 2004), boom operator Sue Kerr (Certificate, Film & Television Sound, 1982), second unit location sound recordist Jeremy Ireland (Specialist Extension Course Certificate Sound, 1996), and foley artist Andrew Simmons (Graduate Diploma in Sound, 2011).

Dan Miau’s (Graduate Diploma in Location Sound, 2002) work as location sound recordist for Waltzing the Dragon with Benjamin Law earned him Best Sound for Lifestyle, Reality or Factual Entertainment, while Best Sound for Interactive Media went to sound designer Paul Kopetko (Graduate Diploma: Screen Music, 2009) for his work on Scavenger Squad.

Hosted by comedians Craig Reucassel and Zoë Norton Lodge, the ceremony was live-streamed across Australia on Saturday 21 November. See the full list of winners here.
