AFTRS students and alumni have swept the 2021 Australian Cinematographers Society NSW Awards, winning 24 prizes across 14 categories, two of those for AFTRS students productions.

The work of Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production student Jono Le Grice and 2020 Master of Arts Screen graduate Ian Tyley have been recognised in the Student Cinematography category for their work on AFTRS student films. Le Grice claimed Gold for 2021 BA production, You and Me By the Sea, while Tyley received silver for 2020 MA capstone, Endlessnessism.

AFTRS alumni received Gold in many of this year’s top categories. Jules O’Loughlin won Gold in the Feature Films – Budget $2m and Over category for his work on Jolt, joined in the category by Andrew Commis who received silver for High Ground. In Feature Films – Budget under $2m, Glenn Hanns won Gold for Moon Rock for Monday, while Joel Froome claimed Bronze for Kathaputali. Continuing the streak, Zoë White received Gold in Drama series for Hit & Run, joined by Nicola Daley, claiming Bronze for Domina.

In the Art Innovation and Specialised Cinematography category, AFTRS talent proved a triple threat with Gold going to Bonnie Elliot for OA_RR, Justine Kerrigan for Living Legacies and Nicola Daley being recognised again, this time for Swan Lake Bath Ballet. Bonnie Elliot was honoured a second time, with Gold in Corporate Branding and Advertising for Flower Hunter, alongside Tania Lambert who won silver for Letters.

Four out of the six prizes awarded in Documentaries went to alumni. Gold went to Andy Taylor for Exposed – The Ghost Train Fire and Josh Flavell for A Fire Inside, while Silver was claimed by Bebi Zekirwovski for My Fight and Jane Castle for When the Camera Stopped Rolling.

Andy Taylor was also honoured on the night with Ross Wood Snr. ACS Judges Award for 2021 Best Entry, recognising his work on Exposed – The Ghost Train Fire and again in Commercials – Local/Regional, earning Gold for Visit NSW – Nel Restaurant.

Also earning multiple awards was Mark Lapwood, who received silver in the Ron Taylor AM ACS & Valerie Taylor AM Wildlife & Nature category for Dolphin Encounter – Waiheke Island and in Music Videos for Caught in the Undertow by Black Smoke Trigger.

Prizes also went to Goldie Soetianto, who won silver in Serial TV & Comedy Series for 1 For All – Bardic Inspiration, and another award for Tania Lambert, whose work on Wakefield earned Gold in Second Unit Cinematography.

Rounding out the honours of the evening was the announcement of ACS accreditation for 6 new members, among them AFTRS alumni, Justine Kerrigan and Simon Smith.

The ceremony was held virtually on 30 October, live from Carriageworks in Sydney. Awards for each state and territory are held in October and November each year with Gold winners automatically progressing through to ACS’ National Awards for Cinematography, to be announced in 2022.
