World Premieres for AFTRS Films at Revelation Perth Film Festival

Fourteen films by AFTRS students and alumni will be on show at the 24ᵗʰ edition of Revelation Perth Film Festival, which returns to theatres this July, presenting over 100 titles all tied around this year’s theme, ‘Distant but Connected’. Among the feature, documentary and short films featured are five AFTRS graduate projects by Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production and Master of Arts Screen students, and three of those will be world premieres.

Set to make their debut are Jenny Hicks’ (Master of Arts Screen, 2020) capstone film, The Stranger, Anastasia James’ (Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, 2020) Pebble and Alex Linder’s (Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, 2019) Anoxia. Following recent appearances at Monster Fest in Sydney and Byron Bay Underground Film Festival, Jean-David Le Goullon’s (Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, 2019) Barnacle Face will also screen, along with Naomi Fryer’s (Master of Arts Screen, 2019) Flickerfest-winning, ADG-nominatedThis River, which will appear as part of the WIFT V-Fest winners showcase after claiming Best Student Film and Best Cinematographer for Ehran Edwards (Master of Arts Screen, 2019).

Following its premiere on NITV and SBS, Warwick Thornton’s highly-acclaimed documentary series, The Beach, has been adapted into a feature for the big screen and will head to Perth for the festival, while We’re Not Here to Fuck Spiders, a new feature produced by Sarah-Jane McAllan (Graduate Diploma in Screenwriting, 2013), edited by Ben Nunney (Graduate Certificate Screen: Documentary, 2018), and showcasing the work of second assistant director Linus Gibson (Bachelor of Arts (Screen), 2017), set dresser Lizzie Dingle (Bachelor of Arts (Screen), 2017) and costume and wardrobe supervisor Theresa McCarthy (Graduate Certificate in Screen Culture, 2011) will also screen. Documentaries, Under a Pagan Sky, executive produced by Rachel Clements (Master of Arts (Film & Television) Producing, 2000) and shot by Tim Alewood (Master of Arts (Film and Television) Cinematography, 2002), and Women of Steel, directed and produced by Robynne Murphy (Certificate in Directing, 1973) and edited by Rowena Crowe (Master of Arts: Film, Television and Digital Media in Documentary, 2005) are also set to appear.

The talents of AFTRS alumni are also being showcased across short films selected for this year’s edition, including Choice, co-directed by Claire Leach (Graduate Diploma in TV Producing (Non-Drama), 2002); Mars, lensed by Adam Lynch (Graduate Diploma in Cinematography, 2010); The Listening, produced and written by Geoffrey Bennett (Diploma Directing, 1978); and Golem, scored by Me-Lee Hay (Graduate Certificate: Screen Music, 2010) and featuring the work of colourist Lachlan Early (Diploma in Camera Fundamentals, 2016; Diploma in Grading, 2017).

Karen Pearlman’s (Master of Arts (Film & Television) Editing, 2000) WIFT V-Fest Best Director-winning I Want to Make a Film About Women will also screen in the V-FEST winners showcase. The film has become a festival favourite since landing on the circuit and has earned St Kilda Film Festival’s Best Documentary Award, Brisbane International Film Festival’s Creative Achievement Award, CinefestOZ’s Best Director award and the ADG Award for Best Direction in a Documentary Subject.

Running from 1-11 July, Revelation Perth Film Festival will present a curated program of documentaries, award-winning features and short films from 21 countries, along with panels, discussions and industry workshops across venues in Perth, alongside their year-round platform, REVSTREAM, consisting of over 300 local and international shorts, features and documentaries.
