AFTRS PRESENTS FLICKERLAB 2024 – A ONE-DAY JOURNEY FROM SHORTS TO FEATURES

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) has partnered with Flickerfest 33rd International Film Festival to present the 2024 FlickerLab, a one-day event that traverses the filmmaker journey from short films to features.

The incredible line-up of panellists includes writer/director/actor Alice Englert (Bad Behaviour, Beautiful Creatures), producer Jodi Matterson (The Dry, Wolf Like Me), director Darlene Johnson (Bluey, Following the Rabbit Proof Fence), director David Michôd (The King, Animal Kingdom), producer Jamie Hilton (Runt, Sleeping Beauty), writer/director Samuel Van Grinsven (Sequin in a Blue Room), producer Mahveen Shahraki (The Rooster), and Peter Skinner, writer and director of the AFTRS’ Award-winning short film Lost Boy. They will be joined by journalists and distribution, screen agency and broadcast executives.

Four sessions across the day will explore the latest filmmaking trends, designed to enhance and develop attendees’ creative ideas and help them get their film noticed in the marketplace. The entire scope of the film making experience will be covered, from initial concept through to script, producing, marketing, distribution and the latest cross-platform and alternative distribution methods.

In the FROM IDEA TO PAGE, a panel of experienced screenwriters will discuss turning a good idea into a good script, looking in detail at development, collaboration and script editing.

THE DIRECTORS’ JOURNEY will look at the career path of an Australian director from independent short filmmaker to feature film director. Areas of discussion will include script development, working collaboratively, casting, directing actors, where ideas come from and how to make the leap from shorts to features.

MAKING IT HAPPEN is about the role of the producer, from budgeting and financing to marketing and distribution and everything in between. The panellists will share their differing approaches to the very important task of getting the film made.

MARKET TO MARKET, CONQUER THE WORLD ON ALL PLATFORMS; DISTRIBUTION, FESTIVALS & MULTI-PLATFORM DISTRIBUTION will put the spotlight on current marketing and distribution trends. The panel will dissect traditional distribution models and offer up innovative cross platform alternatives.
