Intro to Editing introduces the creative craft of editing as a core storytelling practice across film and screen media. Through guided examples, discussion and comparative viewing, you’ll explore the history of editing and how editors shape narrative, emotion and meaning through structure, tone, pace and continuity. Working across scripted and unscripted forms, the course examines how editorial decisions influence audience experience and its context in the wider screen production landscape. You will also gain an awareness of prominent industry softwares through demonstrations.
Taught by some of Australia’s premier editors, become familiar with this key filmmaking role, foundational editing principles and what makes a great editor.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
Recognise the core principles and history of editing as a storytelling craft, including its role in shaping narrative, emotion and audience engagement.
Understand key editing techniques and considerations such as structure, tone, pace and continuity across scripted and unscripted formats.
Identify the role of the editor within the wider production landscape, as well as professional workflows and collaboration with other departments.
Is Intro to Editing right for you?
This is an introductory course that covers editing theory and principles for beginners through interactive lectures, tutorials, curated clips, guided comparisons, and simple non-technical exercises. No prior editing training or industry experience is required.
Please note, this course does not include practical editing exercises or hands-on use with any editing softwares.
This course is ideal for emerging editors, content creators and media practitioners who want to understand the basic principles of editing, as well as directors, writers and filmmakers who are curious about editing as a creative role and want to collaborate more effectively with editors.
Course Requirements and Delivery
Intro to Editing is offered online and in-person, and supplemented by additional post-course resources designed to reinforce and extend your learning.
For the online course, classes are delivered over Zoom with two sessions per week across three weeks. You will need access to a computer with camera, sound and good internet connection, and a quiet place to participate.
The in-person course takes place over two days, 9:30am – 3:00pm.
This course is open to students aged 16 years and over. Students under 18 must complete an Under 18 Consent Form.
