Developed with the support of the Universal Studio Group and Matchbox Pictures, it provides you with basic practical tips and foundational concepts to kick start your understanding of In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX).

Gain a basic understanding of the LED Volume as an on-set tool, and the significance of Real-time Rendering.

Learn about the origins of ‘Virtual Production’ and its impact on workflows and crewing.

Walk away with some basic do’s and don’ts of shooting with an LED Volume Wall.

Is Intro to Volume Studio Basics right for you?

Developed with the support of the Universal Studio Group and Matchbox Pictures, this lecture and seminar format session is for all those interested in Virtual Production who have not yet had the opportunity to explore the use of an LED Volume. If you are a screen practitioner, Producer, Cinematographer, Production Designer, Director, First Assistant Director or Visual Effects Artist, this is the perfect beginners course and will provide you with a solid foundation from which you can continue to learn. You do not need to have any on-set or Visual Effects (VFX) experience to benefit from Volume Studio Basics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get to see a real Virtual Production LED Volume?

Yes. The session will be hosted in AFTRS very own LED Volume and Virtual Production Studio.

If I have never been on a film set, used 3D or used Unreal Engine is that OK?

Yes. This is very much a beginners level session. If you have little or no general film or visual effects (VFX) understanding or experience, the level of this lecture and seminar should still provide you with a great starting point for your learning in this area.

Will I get ‘hands on ‘ or use a ‘Virtual Production’ LED volume or wall during the session?

No. While this is not a hands-on course you will have the opportunity to see, close up, a functioning Virtual Production Studio as part of your introduction to the practice of Virtual Production and In-Camera Visual Effects.

Can I say I have professional Virtual Production and LED Volume experience after attending?

No. This is an beginners learning experience only. It takes additional training to gain the hands on skills required to be able to take up a role in this space but this course is a great place to start if this career path interests you!

I have been on a set many times and have quite a bit of on set VFX experience. Is it worth doing ?Yes, if you have not yet had an opportunity to explore the use of and LED Volume or are interested in gaining an understanding of some of the emerging roles on-set for those with VFX or computer experience. Be aware, however, that other participants likely come from quite diverse experience.
I have lots of 3D animation and/or vfx experience but haven’t been on set. Is it worth doing?

Yes, if you have not yet had an opportunity to explore the use of and LED Volume. It also provides a great opportunity to experience a professional level studio space for the first time. Be aware, however, that other participants likely come from quite diverse experience.

This course is open to students aged 16 years and over (students under 18 must complete an Under 18 consent form).

If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.

AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.

Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.

AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.
