Major Prizes for Alumni at APRA AMCOS’ 2020 Screen Music Awards

L-R: Amanda Brown, Antonio Gambale, Matteo Zingales

AFTRS alumni have been honoured with four top prizes at this year’s Screen Music Awards, presented by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC). The annual awards acknowledge excellence and innovation in screen composition across feature, documentary and short films, television, advertising, and soundtracks.

After earning two Emmy Award nominations for his work on Netflix series, Unorthodox, alumnus Antonio Gambale (Graduate Certificate in Screen Composition, 1999) continues to garner acclaim for the series’ original composition, which has now claimed the Screen Music Awards for Best Television Theme and Best Music for a Mini-Series or Telemovie.

Matteo Zingales (Graduate Diploma (Television and Film) Screen Composition, 2003) has secured Best Music for a Documentary for his original score for Justin Krook’s Machine, a work that also earned him a nomination for AACTA’s Original Score in a Documentary category.

The award for Best Music for a Television Series or Serial was awarded to alumna Amanda Brown (Graduate Certificate in Screen Composition, 1999) for The Secrets She Keeps, a series co-directed by alumnae Jennifer Leacey (Graduate Diploma: Directing (Fiction & Non-Fiction, 2010) and Catherine Millar (Diploma Directing, 1979). This comes off the back of Brown’s double AACTA Awards for Best Original Score on Shannon Murphy’s (Graduate Diploma in Directing, 2013) multi-award-winning feature directorial debut Babyteeth, and Best Original Score in a Documentary on Catherine Dwyer’s Brazen Hussies, executive produced by alumna Sue Maslin (Master of Screen Arts and Business, 1993).

The 2020 Screen Music Awards were presented in a virtual ceremony on 1 December. Watch the ceremony and see the full list of winners here.
