Deals, Rights and Negotiation

This Short, Sharp and Immediately Useful online seminar with entertainment lawyer Nick Cole and producer Andrew Mason will explore strategies for the negotiation, financing and commercialisation of rights.

The internet and the growth of streaming services has changed and continues to change the scope of rights required for the exploitation of content across multiple media platforms. In order to navigate this new media landscape, it’s essential for producers to have a clear understanding of the nature of rights and how they are exploited across media platforms. In this session, we will start with a presentation that will:

• Briefly examine the rise of the streaming services;
• Go back to basics and look at the differences between copyrights and contractual rights;
• Drill down on the different categorisation of rights as they apply to different forms of technology;
• Consider how copyright and the contractual rights that flow from it can be “sliced and diced”; and
• Discuss strategies for negotiation and consider how best to protect your interests;

This will be followed with an interactive session where Nick Cole and Producer Andrew Mason will take a hypothetical project and consider how the financing and exploitation of rights will vary as the parameters for the project change. This will include looking at the project as a feature film project and also as a project for a streaming service.

The seminar runs 2pm-5.30pm AEDT with two 15 minute breaks, and will be delivered completely online via Zoom Video.
