AFTRS Open’s introductory and intermediate level film, TV and radio short courses offer practical and hands-on learning to extend your skill set. All courses are taught by industry professionals in the state-of-the-art facilities of Australia’s premier film school.

This season’s Summer School has been extended to run until February 2017. The new program includes our five-day favourites plus two and three week intensives. All courses are in Sydney.

Filmmaking Intensive

In this five day filmmaking intensive, you'll get busy in the AFTRS state-of-the-art studio and take a short film script from page to screen. You’ll get hands-on experience operating HD cameras, attending production meetings, and working with professional picture & sound editors all while collaborating to create, light, shoot and - most important - finish a short film. At week’s end, students are encouraged to invite family & friends to our AFTRS Open Summer School 'Graduation' Screening.

TV Editing Intensive

This ten day Intensive course (delivered over two consecutive weeks) will combine technical training in the use of Avid Media Composer, the non-linear film/video editing application used extensively in most movie and television productions, and also includes an introduction to the creative art of editing for television and practical, hands-on exercises.

TV and Radio Presenting Intensive

Develop your own on-air persona and learn skills to develop your career in the media. This course combines AFTRS Open’s regular ‘Introduction to TV Presenting’ and ‘Announcing and Presentation’ courses plus a day of our ‘Voice Over’ course into one intensive week. You’ll receive practical tuition in on-camera presenting skills including writing your own scripts, conducting interviews on camera, voice over skills for TV and radio, announcing skills, working with autocue and developing your own unique presenting style.

Short Film Screenwriting Intensive

Write a completed short film script in just five days! Learn from Tropfest winner and Palme d’Or nominee Jonathan Ogilvie and inspiring guest speakers how to take your stories from initial idea through treatment and draft stage, to a finished, polished script ready to be pitched. Story structure, theme, character, roadblocks, arcs, tension, conflict and resolution will be explored as they are used in filmmaking through fast paced lectures and workshops.

Video Production Intensive

Skill up and learn all the basics so you can shoot, edit and upload your own videos - including Social Video, short documentary and corporate videos. You will learn through practical exercises and be taught by Industry practitioners. You'll write, shoot and edit at least two short videos so you can learn by doing. All equipment is supplied by AFTRS.

Writing for TV Intensive

Do you have a great idea for a TV show but need help taking your idea to the next level? Learn the fundamentals of creating viable and original TV drama or comedy series concepts, including working in a team writing environment, in this five-day intensive course. You will learn about: the process of concept creation from idea inception to concept presentation, the structure of a TV series, how to run multiple storylines, how to structure a 5 act episode, how to create a written pitch, writing as part of a team and much more!

Three Week Film School

Are you looking to fast track your filmmaking skills and get an opportunity to use professional equipment and studios? Are you looking to collaborate with other emerging filmmakers and add to your portfolio? Three Week Film School is your chance to immerse yourself in all areas of film studies and filmmaking. This intensive course, taught by award-winning filmmaker and AFTRS graduate Lucy Gaffy and guest speakers, will feature practical exercises along with classroom study and screenings, culminating in making a short film with professional actors in the AFTRS studios.

Looking to get serious about your feature length documentary idea? Looking for constructive feedback and practical exercises to get you started the correct, industry standard way? AFI nominated producer Dylan Blowen (The Snowman, A Northern Town) will guide you from concept to pitch, with lectures, peer reviews and practical exercises to guide your feature documentary (60 min+) idea to the cusp of pre production.
