You’ll learn how to analyse music to picture, make more intentional creative choices, and communicate clearly with composers and sound teams.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
Recognise how screen music functions within the story world, including diegetic, non-diegetic, and hybrid approaches.
Understand the role of music in shaping narrative, tone, and pacing across scenes and edited sequences.
Identify how screen music is developed and communicated within production workflows.
Is Intro to Screen Music right for you?
This is an introductory course that covers screen music basics for beginners through interactive lectures, tutorials, curated clips, guided comparisons and simple non-technical exercises. No formal music training, previous industry experience or knowledge is required.
This course is ideal for directors, writers, editors, emerging composers and media practitioners who want to use music more intentionally in their work. No prior music study is required.
AFTRS Intro courses are open to students aged 16 years and older. Students under 18 must complete an Under 18 Consent Form.
Course Requirements and Delivery
Intro to Screen Music is offered online and in person.
For the online course, classes are delivered over Zoom with two x Zoom sessions per week across three weeks. The course also involves one hour of self-directed learning per week. You will need access to a desktop or laptop computer with camera, sound and good internet connection, and a quiet place to participate.
The in-person course takes place over two days, 9:30am – 3:00pm, and involves three hours of self-directed learning.
