Learn the fundamentals of creating viable and original TV drama and comedy series concepts in this ten-week online course.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This course will guide you through the process of concept creation - from idea inception to concept presentation.
Specific areas to be explored are the creation of a dramatic world, the 'what if' conceptual question, development and creation of a dynamic protagonist, the use of secondary characters, primary and secondary storylines and assembling a series concept document.
The course comprises ten modules with a wide variety of learning activities in a lively online text chat forum and includes:
- Viewing and analysis of existing drama and comedy
- Online group activities
- Individual assignments and tutor feedback
You will also be supplied with course notes for individual download.

LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE
This is an introductory course. You do not need to have any previous experience.
There is an online tutorial session every Thursday evening 7 - 9pm AEST EXCEPT FOR THURSDAY 6TH OCTOBER WHERE THERE WILL BE A ONE WEEK BREAK.
First Tutorial Thursday 18th August.
You will need to dedicate at least 8 hours per week to self-directed study, plus one 2-hour online session. You will also be required to devote time to TV viewing and the production of written assignments.
ABOUT THE TUTOR: LESLEY LEWIS
Lesley started in the industry in 1992 as a medical advisor on the excellent show A Country Practice which lead to her becoming a Story Researcher and Storyliner on the ABC TV series Water Rats. She completed an in-house Script editing traineeship on Murder Call before returning to Water Rats as a Script Editor. Lesley spent a number of years as a Writer and Script Editor on All Saints and then since 2000 she’s worked in-house jobs as Associate Script Producer/Story Editor on 'Headland'; 'McLeod's Daughter'; 'Out of the Blue'; 'Home and Away'; 'Neighbours' and 'Wonderland'
She has also done development on a number of shows and freelance script writing. Recently Lesley spent a year as Story Producer on 'Neighbours' and also recently on ‘Home and Away'.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
You should begin this course with the germ of an idea for a TV drama or comedy show, one that has not yet been developed into a concept or script, to work on during the course.
To participate in this course you MUST have an internet connection (broadband wired OR wireless 3G or 4G/LTE), Google Chrome, and the ability to enable cookies within your web browser.
