In this advanced sound skills course, you will be guided through hands-on exercises with industry-current equipment to build practical skills in booming, wiring, mixing, sound reporting, and collaborating with production teams under real-world conditions. You will learn to select and deploy microphones effectively, configure and manage wireless systems, and gain confidence in managing audio on set and on location.
Over two immersive days, master how to operate as a location sound professional — technically skilled, creatively alert, and production-ready — across drama, documentary and factual formats.

This advanced location sound course is designed for early-career sound recordists, independent filmmakers and freelance videographers looking to expand their audio skills for screen projects, blending theory, demonstration and hands-on practice. It is expected that students entering this course already have a basic understanding of production workflows, roles and responsibilities as well as some knowledge sound equipment.
It is also ideal for those with a working knowledge of sound equipment and workflows, such as post-production audio and musicians, looking to gain practical on-set experience.
Course Requirements and Delivery
AFTRS Advanced: Location Sound Skills is an in-person course taught at AFTRS Campus over two consecutive days, 9:30am – 5:00pm.
AFTRS will provide all the equipment required for this course, participants are not permitted to bring their own equipment. Practical exercises will take place in AFTRS studios, around campus and nearby outdoor locations (weather permitting), so you must wear enclosed shoes.

This course is for students aged 18+ only.
If a student wishes to withdraw from a course, they may do so up to 15 days before the course commences and get a full refund. Cancellations 14 days or less before course commencement will incur a penalty.
AFTRS reserves the right to cancel any course for any reason at any time. In the event of a course being cancelled by AFTRS prior to commencement a 100% refund or credit note of the course fees paid will be provided.
Should AFTRS need to cancel a course after commencement, but before its completion, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not feasible, it is at AFTRS sole discretion to issue either full or partial credit notes depending on the circumstances.
AFTRS will make every effort to ensure the scheduled run of any course.
