This ten-day intensive course (delivered over two consecutive weeks) will combine technical training in the use of Avid Media Composer, the non-linear film/video editing application used extensively in most movie and television productions, and also includes an introduction to the creative art of editing for television and practical, hands-on exercises.

The numbers of jobs in the post-production area in television has been rapidly increasing, and there are real opportunities there for people with the right skills.

During the course you will complete the official Avid-certified intensive course combining Media Composer Fundamentals 1 and 2 (MC101 and MC 110) , which together will prepare you for Avid’s User Level certification in Media Composer 8.

The 101 part of the course will lead you through the interface and basic editing techniques before moving on to:
•Trimming and fine-tuning the edit
•Adjusting audio
•Handling multi camera editing
•Adding transitions and adding titles
•Outputting your finished project

The training is hands-on and features project-based lessons in which you work on real-world projects ranging from extreme sports and dazzling documentary footage to an episode of the television show Hell's Kitchen.

The second part of the User certification course (110) provides a solid foundation in audio and video effects capabilities and you will be taken through the basic effects-building interface; then, using a real-world, hands-on approach, you’ll learn:
•Fundamental audio adjustments and effects
•Multilayered video compositing
•Tracking and stabilization
•Various retiming methods
•Basic colour-grading techniques

In addition to completing these two official Avid certification courses, you will hear from several craft editors who will give you an overview of what it means to be an editor today. You’ll gain insight into what the role involves and things to think about when choosing your pathway. You will learn about the practicalities of the job and the necessity to specialise eventually. These course guests are specialists in their fields (reality/drama/documentary) and will offer advice on how to enter the industry and give an insight into their roles. They’ll also analyse the logic of their genres and offer advice and inspiration to help you actively seek knowledge from the wealth of resources available and how to use those resources to make them better editors.

The Intensive will also cover post-productions workflows and the role of the Assistant Editor. Course cost includes Avid textbook and cost of the online exam.

Additional information on the Avid examination process and a thirty-day free trial is available on their website .

“Fantastic course. I felt that the lecturer not only knew her stuff, but also cared about the class. She explained things in a way that made complex ideas accessible, and dealt with a large variety of student backgrounds and experience levels. Above all else, she made the course fun. I will be recommending this course to interested students of my own.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed attending and participating in this course. The variety of skills and theory I learnt from the teacher was very satisfying. Even having previous experience as an editor, I still learnt a lot with regards to the craft because she connected the curriculum with industry experience.”
