12pm - YOUR CAREER IN SCREEN AND AUDIO: INSIDER ADVICE

Motion picture and sound recording in Australia are multi-billion dollar activities employing over 55,000 people and rapidly growing.
In this session you’ll hear from AFTRS CEO Dr. Nell Greenwood and industry practioners about the future of careers in the screen and audio sector.

Don’t miss this insider advice on how you can be successful in the field.

THOMAS WILSON-WHITE 

Thomas is an award-winning director and screenwriter. He wrote the smash hit series Heartbreak High for Netflix which won an International Emmy and was #1 in Australia and top 10 in 45 other countries within a week of its release. Heartbreak High won 5 AACTA awards, was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New Series and Thomas’ episode was shortlisted for the Betty Roland Prize in Scriptwriting at the 2023 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. 

Thomas is currently writing his second feature film Wildflowers with script editor Anna Seifert-Speck (Ammonite, Supernova, Gods Own Country) and adapting a best-selling novel for TV.  

His debut feature film The Greenhouse premiered at BFI: Flare London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival and Frameline. It won Best Direction in a Feature Film (budget under $1M) at the 2021 Australian Directors Guild awards, multiple Best Film awards and the Audience Choice Award at 2021 Mardi Gras Film Festival. The Greenhouse was then acquired by Netflix ANZ. 

Thomas is the creator, writer and executive producer of his autobiographical TV series Sick To Death with the support of Screen Australia and Screen NSW and in collaboration with Rhapsody Films, Easy Tiger and Invention Studios. 

BRONTE NENER 

Bronte Nener is a Bunaba woman of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Born and raised in South Sydney, she developed a keen interest in the art of macro photographs and surreal portrait photography.

Her strong interest in the power of photography has led her driven pursuit in joining Australian camera departments to help tell Australian stories.

After studying at AFTRS, Bronte’s career starter was a seven-month trainee role on the Marvel feature film, Thor: Love and Thunder and Bronte has since been working in camera departments across film and television including FuriosaKingdom of the Planet of the ApesThe Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and Bump. 

HANNAH-RAE MEEGAN 

Hannah-Rae Meegan is a passionate queer creative and one half of the duo Mon & Han, known for their narrative content through SLAG Productions.

Along with Monique Terry, Hannah created, wrote, and starred in The Formal, a TikTok and Screen Australia funded series with 12 million views and over 100,000 followers. Their latest series, Touch, funded by Screen Australia and Screen NSW, has 6 million views and a 150,000-strong audience.

Currently, they are developing multiple projects both in the online world and in TV through their production company. 

SIMON BEATON 

Simon Beaton is currently a podcast producer at LiSTNR. Previously, he was a high school English teacher, changing careers to study Radio & Podcasting at AFTRS in 2022.

He has now worked as a producer and panel operator for Triple M’s Australia Today with Steve Price & Natarsha Belling, as well as helping create and produce the daily news podcast This Arvo in Sydney, and the Blak Matters podcast.

Currently working on the afternoon edition of the daily podcast, The Briefing, his role involves everything from sourcing original stories through to recording, editing and publishing an episode each weekday.
