Amal Awad

Tutor - Short Courses

Amal Awad is an award-winning screenwriter and AFTRS screenwriting graduate, as well as a director and actor. Over the last decade she has participated in numerous writers’ rooms with some of Australia’s top production companies, including Porchlight, Fremantle, Wooden Horse, Roadshow Rough Diamond, Endemol Shine and more.

Amal received early development funding from Screen Australia and Screen NSW for her TV series Over My Dead Body and is a writer on Plausible Deniability (Random Pictures), for which she won an Outstanding Achievement in Writing at the NYC Web Fest in 2024.

In 2019, Amal was selected to participate in Screen Australia’s Developing the Developer program, which led to a placement with the drama development team at Fremantle Australia. She was next selected to be a director’s attachment with Ana Kokkinos for Ten Pound Poms S1 (BBC/Stan), returning in S2 full-time as the director’s assistant, with Amal directing additional units in both seasons.

Amal is also the author of eight books. Her latest novel, Bitter & Sweet, was selected by readers as a favourite in the 2024 Better Reading Top 100. Her first novel, Courting Samira, had its US release in 2023. Her third novel, The Things We See in the Light, has been optioned by a major production company.
