From Monday 18 to Friday 22 July, we held our annual AFTRS Masters Week, a week-long focus on our Master of Art Screen and Master of Arts Screen: Business programs. Prospective students got to meet our lecturers, students, and alumni, learn about our courses, join live discussions, take a virtual campus tour, view a selection of work produced at the School, and get some great tips on applications for the 2023 intake.

MONDAY 18 JULY

5.00 – 6.00 PM (AEST)
MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: DIRECTING
Head of Directing Rowan Woods and senior lecturer Megan Simpson Huberman host an in-depth discussion with recent directing graduate, Ruby Challenger, whose capstone film just made its world premiere in the La Cinef competition at Cannes Film Festival.

MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: BUSINESS
Program Convenor and Head of Screen Business Peter Herbert and a recent graduate discuss key outcomes of Australia’s foremost screen business course, designed for a new generation of screen leaders.

STUDENT FILM SCREENING: ELAGABALUS (Dir. Xanthe Dobbie)
Burdened by a prophecy that dooms them to a violent death, Elagabalus, a genderqueer Roman Emperor, embraces a life of excess. Much to the dismay of their controlling mother, Elagabalus is enamoured by a dashing charioteer. But as Elagabalus’ habits grow increasingly sadistic, mother and lover must band together to fulfill destiny.

Acting Head of Producing Bethany Bruce and Senior Lecturer Julie Greene with recent graduate, Charles Olsen, offer insights into this career-accelerating course, live from the state-of-the-art AFTRS studios.

MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: SOUND DESIGN
Head of Sound Stephen Murphy and a recent graduate take us on a behind-the-scenes tour of AFTRS’ state-of-the-art mix theatre while reflecting on the ways this course explores sound as a means of driving narrative and building story worlds.

MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: SCREENWRITING
Head of Screenwriting Dr. Pieter Aquilia and one of her current students offers an overview of this in-demand program, with a reputation for developing the next wave of Australian screenwriters

STUDENT FILM SCREENING: LOST BOY (Dir. Peter Skinner)
Tender, tense, violent and confronting, Lost Boy is a film about how men deal with their emotions and how those feelings can manifest in the absence of honest conversation. Lost Boy takes an unflinching look at masculine identity while cinematically exploring who we are and what truths we hide beneath our bruises.

WEDNESDAY 20 JULY

Head of Editing Roland Gallois and senior lecturer Phillippa Harvey offer a guided tour of AFTRS impressive post-production facilities and discuss the student experience with a recent graduate.

MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: MUSIC
Head of Music Cameron Patrick and Senior Lecturer Greg Wise demonstrate the uniqueness of this versatile program and discuss the student perspective with recent graduate Sophia Christopher, whose capstone film just made its world premiere in the La Cinef competition at Cannes Film Festival.

Head of Cinematography Kim Batterham ACS leads a discussion with an alum about the Master of Arts Screen: Cinematography, as they lead us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the world-class AFTRS studios.

STUDENT FILM SCREENING: THIS RIVER (Dir. Naomi Fryer)
During an Australian 1990s summer, Jacquie celebrates graduating high school with her friends and family. But when a boy she likes breaks her trust at a party it shatters her sense of self. As Jacquie begins her process of healing, she connects with loved ones and nature finding the strength to move on.

THURSDAY 21 JULY

Head of Production Design Igor Nay and Senior Lecturer Natalie Beak, along with current students Robert and Reilly, give you a glimpse of the AFTRS facilities and discuss the thrilling career-accelerating opportunities available through the Master of Arts Screen: Production Design.

MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN: DOCUMENTARY
Head of Documentary Richard Welch and Lecturer Kate Blackmore discuss the Master of Arts Screen: Documentary, highlighting access to industry, collaboration and offer a preview of some exciting graduate projects.

STUDENT FILM SCREENING: THE FAMILIARS (Dir. Millie Malcolm)
In the wake of her grandmother’s death, Alison’s volatile mother, Liz, is intent on finding a family heirloom. As Alison struggles to keep the family in balance, the discovery of the mysterious heirloom releases a dark power within her. As Liz’s behaviour escalates to violence, Alison is forced to make a decision – live in fear or use the power and destroy her family.

In the picture-book town of Collector, a young girl and her gang of rogue environmentalists are trying to save the planet as the world goes into lockdown. The main target of their rebellion…the girl’s very own father.

MASTER OF ARTS SCREEN (9 DISCIPLINES)

The Master of Arts Screen is a hands-on transformative learning experience. This two-year, full-time degree is designed to empower and enable future creative leaders of the screen industry and fast-track their careers.

Offered in 9 disciplines (Directing, Producing, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound Design, Music, Documentary), the program includes shared subjects in screen studies, research and development, deep discipline learning and cross-disciplinary projects to allow students to develop a dynamic and multi-faceted skill set.
