AFTRS has announced the opening of eight new Discipline Lead roles to teach the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production program and assist the School in shaping the next generation of Australian storytelling and screen creatives. Discipline Leads are integrated into the course to replace the more traditional Heads of Department found in industry but feature a greater focus on student experience and quality outcomes. The Discipline Leads will deliver the eight specialties covered by the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Screen Studies, Screenwriting, Sound, Producing and Production.

The Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production is a hands-on generalist undergraduate program designed to take both new and seasoned students in screen media and provide them with knowledge and experience of every facet of contemporary filmmaking. The program has a storied history of producing multi-skilled graduates experienced enough to create their own content and highly sought after by industry. To continue to facilitate this, the Discipline Leads will oversee industry currency and engagement relevant to the discipline of the program to maximise student career opportunities.

The need for new roles began as a response to the evolving nature of the Australian Screen industry and the call for more immediate implementation of technological and cultural changes. This culminated in the new ‘Discipline Lead’ positions that continue to promote AFTRS’ commitment to industry standard education and to facilitate a more collaborative and evolving creative landscape for students to thrive in. The Discipline Leads have been designed to champion AFTRS’ values in creating course-wide inclusive and respectful learning environments, as well as cultures specific to discipline.

The large scope and responsibilities of the Discipline Leads require highly experienced industry practitioners with the capability to realise flexible curriculum approaches and inclusive learning environments. The Discipline Leads will have substantial experience within their field of work, as well as a background in teaching or mentoring to oversee the development of curriculum and work closely with students in lectures, workshops or one-on-one sessions. These leading educators will also draw on discipline-specific networks of professionals to enrich the course and maintain current practice.
