Short Courses: What’s On in February?

Thinking about trying something new in 2024? Whether you’re looking to launch your media career, test your hand behind the camera, or add editing to your filmmaking repertoire, AFTRS has a suite of courses this month to help you take your first step.

Spend up to a week at AFTRS mastering the foundational skills of camera and sound operations, TV and radio presenting, and editing with Avid Media Composer—without the need for any prior knowledge or experience. Led by our team of industry experts, these immersive courses offer dedicated time and space for your learning, held in our state-of-the-art studios and labs. You’ll gain hands-on, practical skills while building the confidence to pursue a career in these dynamic and thrilling fields.

Learn how to present from the ground up with our five-day TV & Radio Presenting Intensive. This practical course will help you develop your own unique on-air personality, learn techniques for conducting interviews and skills for presenting on-camera. You’ll be able to practice and receive expert feedback and advice from presenters Melissa Femia and Sally Stanton. TV & Radio Presenting Intensive starts Monday, 5 February.

Master the fundamental skills to produce high quality images and sound for documentary and drama in Camera & Sound Fundamentals. Cover all the basics from efficient camera and tripod setup to radio and boom mic placement, while thinking about the frame and coverage to tell a story in this weekend-long course on campus. Under the guidance of shooter-producer Rob Gunn, you’ll learn these technical skills and be introduced to the demands of shooting with a one or two person crews. Join Camera & Sound Fundamentals starting Saturday, 10 February.

Tackling a new piece of software like Avid Media Composer can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. AFTRS has a range of short courses to help you understand the industry-standard editing software, and even start you on your journey to becoming an Avid Certified User: Media Composer. Learn from editor and colourist Rebecca Edwards in our Mac labs on campus in a weekend-long Editing with Avid Fundamentals introductory course (starting Saturday, 10 February), or the first of our two-course series Avid MC101 Intensive (starting Monday, 19 February), preparing you for Avid user certification.

Find the right course for you this month and learn something new at AFTRS.
